Oil Pan Damage !

I was cruising the roads around Lake Texoma with a friend when I saw some broken-up asphalt
coming, I thought it would clear. I didn't have time to go around, so I really was NOT expecting
the loud noise I heard. I stopped immediately and got out to check for oil all over the ground,
but found none so I kept going.

I didn't see the damage until today, wow !!!

I've had an new oil pan in my Summit wish list for over a year, it's time to make that
purchase now !!!

Time to add a skid plate to protect the new pan.

I've made it 5-6 years with this pan. The new pan will have another inch of clearance. I can't add
an ugly skid plate to my precious TBucket !

It's like taking your good looking women out to see your best friends, can't put sweat pants on her !!!

So how many times have you taken a women to your friends party that looked
like that in sweats without celebrity status?????

looking at the oil PAN DAMAGE!
Id SAY ouch!:(:crying:
AND LOOK AT IT AS A GOOD REASON TO PURCHASE
A 50 CAL AMMO CAN ,
AS A BASIC SOURCE OF SHEET STEEL,
AND START TAKING ACURATE MEASUREMENTS..
and as always TAPE and poster board used as a pattern helps prevent problems

one more in an ENDLESS list of reasons that you might want to OWN AND use a welder ,
and some fabrication skills to rebuild and fabricate a newly rebuilt oil pan

Tight sweat pants would show off her camel toe. :D Hey, my eyes are up here!

Back to regularly scheduled program ........

Ordered a new Canton 15-240M road race oil pan from Jegs, after talking with Canton tech
support. I needed to make sure it would fit a Dart SHP SBC block. I had the 15-240 on my
wish list, but the dip stick was on the wrong side. The Dart block also uses the thick gasket
where it goes around the timing cover. So I ordered the Fel-Pro one piece gasket for a two
piece rear seal. Can this shit get anymore convoluted and confusing ???

Actually it can !!! Fel-Pro makes a one piece gasket with the dip stick on the right, left, both
or none at all. I didn't want to wait on special order so I'm using the same one I did when I
built the engine originally. It can have the dip stick on either side.

Found out that the "M" moves the dip stick from the driver side to the passenger side. The
pan is actually for a Corvette, but since I don't have frame or suspension getting in the way
it works. This new pan will give me another 1-1/4" more ground clearance over the Milodon
30901. The system capacity will be reduce by one quart, from 8 quarts to 7 quarts.

Looks like it will be dropped shipped from Canton and will be at least a week before it goes out
.... if I'm really lucky !!! Nobody but Champ Oil Pans has a pickup for the 7" pan depth with a
Melling 10552 (10% Over Volume) oil pump. And guess what, nobody has that in stock so it's
a special order from Summit.

looks like a nice component!
I hope it looks as good when it arrives as it does in the adds pictures

It's much easier to upgrade components now when I didn't just $7K last week !!!

I did the same with the harmonic damper last year.

I still expect to modify the pickup tube, that one bolt hole will not work for my situation ?????

Got the damaged pan off this afternoon, here is another look at it while it's off.

But I have a problem with the new pan, it hits the oil pump before it can go forward enough to
align with the bolts holes in the block. I don't have the pickup tube installed, so it hitting the
pump body. It needs to go forward another 1/8" to let the bolt holes align with the block.

Note the difference in corners #1 and #2. Number 2 cuts the corner off more than corner #1.

You can see where the oil pump is putting marks on the pan wall when I try to push the
pan forward.

the problem you have is hardly rare in fact its rather common,
are you aware that the new oil pan pick-up, or if you changed oil pumps,
that change in component design (oil pump or pick-up) may be hitting the oil pan
obviously your oil pan and pick-up must function in the new oil pan, so ID suggest putting some wet nail polish on the areas ,
you suspect are hitting and try to isolate the interference points as some component may need to be modified, or the new oil pan, oil pan pick-up,
or internal oil pan baffles might need to be modified
its very common for the internal oil baffles or the oil pan pick-up may need to be modified

With he amount of damage done to the pan....are you sure it did not bend anything on the pump or pick-up?

If it only needs a small amount of clearance you could heat the area with a torch and massage the metal with some hammer work.

I needed to do that with my canton pan after the rods went thru each side. I used a body working hammer and a torch to lightly
reform the pan ....then applied fresh paint..

I don't have the oil pump pickup installed, only the pump when I tested the oil pan fit. Actually
the pickup and pump body are at the same height, so I just put modeling clay on the bottom of
the pump only. That way I don't have to install/uninstall the pickup if a change is needed.

The pump gears rotate freely, so I don't think the pump is bent.

The old pickup looked slightly damaged.

All I have is a MAP gas torch, wonder if that will provide enough heat.

I have realized that I can't get a hammer into the pan to strike it where it's needed to provide clearance. Also it's
going to be very close to the bottom of the pan, only about one inch from the bottom. Then there is the kick-out
coming around that also close. It's going to put up a fight to make it move if I could even hit it.
