I see lots of guys buying STRIPPED lower AR receivers, but

I've always been into hunting rifles more than military designs,
so please bare with my partial lack of info,
yes I think everyone should own a semi auto clone of a military rifle,
personally I think the FAL, or M1A in 308 win, are ideal options,
and yes the AR15 is very popular, but it lacks the extended range and punch of the 308.
Id be very likely to upgrade to a 24' heavy fluted stainless barrel, with a 1:8 twist rate,

as the added rigidity and mass and fast twist helps, maintain top accuracy with the 62-75 grain bullets
under hard use and higher heat.

yes you can buy a barrel shorter than 20" but you lose velocity rather rapidly with shorter barrel lengths
yes you can buy a slower twist rate than 1:8 but you rapidly lose the ability to shoot bullets heavier than 63-70 grains

I see lots of guys buying STRIPPED lower AR receivers,
but WHAT I don't see is either complete parts kits to assemble those,
or a place to buy complete lower AR assemblies.
I also don't see many detailed videos showing exactly how to assemble the kits of parts, any tools required ET>
I see bolt carrier assembles listed, and "complete KITS" listed but I'm not sure what included or what's missing, and ,
its rather obvious from the pricing that your not getting all the parts required.
also I see several places listing complete upper assemblies and I'm wondering if by complete does that mean you have a functional rifle if you connect it to a lower assembly or does a "complete upper assemble still require all the internal bolt components?
in short how are these kits and parts purchased and what's needed to have a functional rifle and who sell s quality parts so you could build a FUNCTIONAL: CLONE to a COLT H-BAR or similar rifle?

the 223 wylde chamber is designed to feed and fire both the 5.56 and 223 cartridges with minimal pressure and great reliability as its marginally larger, has more clearance and longer throat,
guns with 223 wylde chamber also require different reloading dies to reload the brass if 5.56 and 223 cartridges fired in the 223 wylde chamber (yeah you could resize and reload with 223 or 5.56 dies but its really over working the brass significantly and it will cause durability issues if done repeatedly) generally youll seat the bullets out farther and use a 1:8 twist rate and use the 62-70 grain bullets in the 223 wylde chamber

223 wylde chamber is designed to maximize function, and reduce issues with factory or reloaded ammo
I own several AR15 223 wylde chamber , no issues, if you use the correct reload dies or any factory ammo

http://www.ar15builder.com/

(I DOUBT THIS IS 5% of the vendors)

If I could only own a single military style semi auto clone,
for personal use, I think it would be hard to pass on a M1A1 clone, in 7.62 caliber

Grumpy go to Palmetto state armory or Daytona tactical I did a stainless steel 223/556 AR build for $435.00 total . Got a stripped lower from Aim surpluss & a SS rifle kit complete minus lower from PSA for $399.00 assembeled it in about 2 hours & now have a nice rifle that shoots as good as my S&W M&P15 for half the cost. A couple weeks ago Aim surpluss had stripped lowers for $35.00 so I got 4 more & I'm going to build a couple 300 blackouts an 18 inch barreled rifle & a 10 inch pistol & damn they are fun to shoot

Grumpy do you know you can also buy an 80% lower with no FFL involved & do the finish machine work yourself with a drill press

yes I'm aware, of that option, but I,m wondering how difficult it is to do ACCURATELY , while I have the necessary machine tools I also know from experience that EYEBALLING the location of machined holes is rarely going to produce accurate locations

http://garage.grumpysperformance.co...em-are-you-looking-to-build-in-an-ar15.16651/
its just not that difficult, YOU BUY A STRIPPED RECIEVER
ID strongly suggest a 16"-20" stainless heavy barrel and a high quality bolt assembly
as those parts are critical and the heavy barrel is less likely to over heat, (yeah its heavy)
and a lower receiver and collect as many mill spec parts as you can that match the barrel diam and length,
or
a complete kit of parts, building an AR clone is ADULT LEGGOS

most of this linked video's info,(above)
relates to most but certainly not all barrels

Buy a jig kit with bits and everything will be fine. Good ones out there and some use a router instead of milling machine/drill press.

can you post a few links for the 80% parts and JIGS ?

Just a couple of these. There are hundreds of them. Only about 3 companies make the receivers in the U.S Some billet, some 6061 T6. All work the same and can't really tell the difference. High end uppers is where you get accuracy from.

Read the articles on Ares and their court battles in California. Very interesting to say the least.

Sportsman's guide also sells the 80% AK receivers pre-bent or flats to bend your own. All are fun to build.

I have bought all the jigs and tools to build either rifle and some cost a lot. But to do it right, they are needed. Don't want a barrel exploding in your face. Try an AR first and follow the instructions and you will see how easy it is and safe.

Palmetto State Armory has a great deal on a complete kit this week on sale for less than $400.00 less the receiver.
Bear Creek Arsenal is another. Just keep looking and there are plenty to see. I've built 15 ARs this year and 5 AKs. My kids,3, each built their own AR and AK. $$$$$
Youtube has lots of videos on building both.
Always practice gun safety when building or handling guns. Accidents happen only by being careless or stupid. Guns can not go bang by themselves.

https://geissele.com/reaction-rod.html

armorers wrench, roll pin punches, hammer, torque wrench, padded vise, reaction rod.
I use threaded roll pins instead of the usual. A long number bit and a long 6-32 tap. way nicer, looks better, and you don't potentially screw up the finish on your receiver if you slip.

http://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...p-chrome-ar-15-sku100010493-77813-105171.aspx

I think one huge reason the basic AR15 product line, and rifle design is so darn popular,
is its an erector set gun design with standardized, and easily interchangeable , mill spec parts,
making almost all parts from dozens of manufacturers interchangeable to a large extent
.
now theres dozens, if not thousands of non-compatible configurations
,but the fact is that if you do the required research you'll find millions of compatible config combinations
but in most cases a few basic configurations, are interchangeable with almost all parts available
and if you stick to similar configurations theres a great deal of interchangeability.
and theres even some adapter parts to make, some odd combos compatible

example if you want a replacement barrel even a semi-skilled home gunsmith,
could easily replace a ar15 barrel.,
unlike most of the other rifle designs one might select to use.

I would strongly suggest the heavy fluted barrels be used in any AR15 based rifle,
while its true it adds considerable weight , the heavy fluted and ideally stainless or chrome lined barrels,
have advantages as they are frequently noticeably more accurate and tend to handle heat and wear issues better,
and both barrels or interchangeable upper assembly's are easy to swap

personally I think the government ought to promote civilian marksmanship,
something like having a once a year , optionally available test,
for any adult 18 years old and older,
that can legally own a firearm, and have the tests available locally,
(within 25 miles of, ) every zip code.

(every weekend the test should be available,
the at your local outdoor rifle range test that certifies your skills, )
that you can take up to three times in any one year,
and if you can shoot well enough with a military style, bolt action or semi-auto,rifle of your choice,
in any commonly available military caliber 223,7.62/39 308, win-or -30/06 service rifle clone,
that you own personally,
if you can shoot well enough,

(so you can put 8 out of 10 shots in a 10" circle at 200 yards shooting offhand)
or 8 of 10 shots in a 6" circle while sitting,
,in under 2 minutes time,)
you get a $1000 tax credit for that year.:D
if both you and your wife can quality thats a $2000,
FOR that year's tax credit, that you mail in with your tax return.
if you can shoot well enough,
it would be a good reason to keep in practice and own a firearm.

I put my first AR together with tools I allready had you don't really need anything fancy if you get a complete upper the headspace is allready checked just put the stripped lower together with a LPK & slide it into the upper push the pins in load a mag & fire away. I own a couple mid dollar ARs & how I shoot I can't tell the difference. Now I'm far from a professional shooter but at 100 - 150 yards I hit a target

Grumpy I feed my ARs with anything if its cheap I will buy it steel or brass they don't care reloads or what .I know I have run tens of thousands of rounds through my ARs & I can't remember ever having a missfire. An AR eats ammo almost as good as an AK

right now theres several places to buy AR15 based kits, receivers and parts package deals that it would be a very good idea to take full advantage of if you have any interest in owning or keeping a currently owned ar15 based rifle operational, having a small parts kit a spare upper assembly sure adds to the long term durability potential.
having an extra heavy varmint weight stainless barrel and chrome bolt assembly and, recoil springs, extractors etc. a lower receiver parts kit would be a good long term investment.

I keep 3 or more of each, just in case!

AND TO OUR BENEFIT, YOU CAN HAVE A COMPLETE 16" BARREL UPPER ASSEMBLY TO A COMPLETE 28" UPPER ASSEMBLY TO FIT ON ANY AR15 LOWER PLATFORM THAT YOU BUILD FOR HOME DEFENSE OR LONG RANGE SHOOTING. BUT REMEMBER IF YOU WANT A SHORT BARRELED RIFLE [LESS THAN 16"] , YOU HAVE TO APPLY FOR THE PERMITS FIRST BEFORE YOU PUT IT ON YOUR LOWER ASSEMBLY TO STAY LEGAL AND MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE IT IN THE HOUSE WITH YOUR OTHER RIFLE PLATFORMS, UNLESS IT IS ALREADY IN A PISTOL PLATFORM. BATFE MAKES THEIR OWN INTERPRETATIONS OF THE LAW WHEN THEY FIND THEM WITH OTHER ARs.

TO START IS THE HARD PART, BUT IN HALF A DAY OR LESS WITH YOUR SKILLS, YOU CAN HAVE A NICE HOME BUILT RIFLE ALL LEGAL AND NO ONE WILL KNOW ABOUT IT UNLESS YOU TELL. JUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS WITH THE JIG KITS AND IT WILL ALL WORK NICELY.

one of my friends ordered one of these stainless, kits with a heavy fluted stainless barrel and chrome bolt assembly
that looked like an excellent value , as a stripped receiver costs under $100 and a muzzle brake can be had for under $60, resulting in a very accurate, but heavy semi auto target rifle that accepts ar 15 magazines and can shoot well under 1/2" hundred yard groups of a bench rest after you add a high quality scope and scope mounts & rings.
keep in mind quality scope mounts, rings , and a high quality scope goes a long way towards allowing an accurate rifle reaching its full potential

yes the total for the rifles components, scope and mounts, comes to about
$1580, but thats a far better quality rifle , for the price, youll pay, than most commercially, over the counter, available choices

Grumpy that looks like it would be a darn nice varmint rifle, but it would easily weight 11 lbs loaded with that scope, rings and heavy barrel so I have two questions
(1)why would you need a muzzle brake on an 11 lb 223 rem caliber varmint rifle ?
recoil will be minimal!
(2) why would you not include an adjustable height swivel style bi-pod, and a good adjustable rifle sling, as your surely going to need both, if your spending much time hunting and carrying an 11 lb rifle.
those are excellent points that I should have , mentioned or pointed out!
your 100% correct on the need for a sling and bi-pod , on any varmint rifle
.
you'll carry and use for stalk and shoot varmint hunting and use in the field.
Now as to the muzzle brake , yes recoil is minimal but if your hunting small game, or shooting varmints at ranges over 250 yards or so, you,ll have a much easier time keeping the target in the scopes field of view during recoil with a muzzle brake as the target may only be the size of a can of soda at 250-400 yards and it won't take a great deal of rifle movement to obscure the target.
personally I like this harris 13"-27" bi-pod as it allows you to use it both prone and sitting.

btw I found these work rather well

Nickel Boron AR15 Bolt Carrier Group
Precision machined complete BCG (Bolt Carrier Group) combines shot peened surfaces with Nickel Boron finish for the best lubricity, function, and endurance. Fits guns chambered for .223, 5.56, .204, 300 Blackout, etc. Made to exact compliance with military drawings, then taken to the next level with advanced machining and finishing processes:
The bolt is 9310 formula steel, heat treated, magnetic particle inspected, with gas rings fitted to Milspec. The carrier is 8620 formula steel, heat treated, and held to the closest internal tolerances for accuracy and reliable function... Including full auto applications. The cam pin and firing pin are Swiss Screw turned and precision ground to achieve the closest dimensional tolerances and straightness. CNC machining and exact heat treating makes the extractor reliable and extremely wear resistant. And finally the Gas Key... CNC machined to comply exactly with military drawings, it gets heat treated, chrome lined, and is then torqued and staked onto the carrier in compliance with full auto military specifications.

Just don't use the F/A parts in the last pic/diagram---except the bolt Assy and you should be safe with L/E.

I thought you had an AR and if not you are doing your homework on building/repairing them. Real simple weapon to build and repair and is/can be made to be VERY accurate. Cleaning is the MOST important part of the functionality of this weapon. Get to building one, you can only waste a little time and maybe one or two 80% receivers if you mess up and still not have a bunch invested in it. Good Luck!

yes I have an ar15, its a colt h-bar, so does almost every one of my friends, but I would also be nice to build a custom-built personal version, and Im looking into that,as I really like the varmint rifle heavy barrel version one of my neighbors purchased.
as far as I'm concerned it would be a damn good Idea if most sane , emotionally stable adult males & a few females owned and knew how to effectively use a decent military-style rifle, and had one and a few spare parts and a few hundred rounds of ammo on hand at all tines

https://jtactical.com/products/47

yes Im certain there's a segment of the civilian population that is enthralled/enchanted and mesmerized at the idea of owning and using a full auto conversion (mostly illegal to own ,unless you go through a ton of paper- work, pay fees, and the cost of a legal rifles in the tens of thousands of dollars, and wait months for a personal investigation)
honestly I just don't see the benefits unless pissing ammo away far faster is the goal.
the AMERICAN and the ENGLISH military's both did extensive , decades long and repeated ,research with well trained,
experienced troops and new recruits and in both testing the results showed far more hits on target from semi auto fire!

You don't have to have another lower Assy. Just use a low trigger pull Assy in it and build an upper Assy the way you want and put it on the Colt lower Assy when you want the H-Barrel at what ever length for gopher hunting to about 500 yards.

I being of sound mind[sic] have taught all my children and grand children how to shoot and survive in the wild with all kinds of weapons as well as books and break downs of them all, and to live with just about nothing but their brain. but to always be prepared. I was a Boy Scout and NEVER forgot to be prepared. They all have a [TO GO] bag with 3 days rations and water as well as a fire starter kit/s , a knife and a place for 22 ammo and other specific ammo as to their liking, and a large First Aid Kit with trauma essentials included. You never know who might know more than you when the need arises. They range in age from 8 t0 40 and am proud to have left them a little knowledge.
