400ci small block fuellie heads which cams should be used

Hello everybody

I have a 400ci small block.
I am going to fit 65 feullie heads.
I have several intakes: Victor jnr/ torquer 2/ performer
Does anyone here has any experience with this setup?

Any help/ suggestions are very welcome

That is a common type of question although without knowing what you intend to do with it we really cannot advise properly.
Additionally you are not telling us what type of cam profile, exhaust you intend to run.
Remember that internal combustion engine is really an air pump and thus the key is to match parts that allow it the proper flow for its use.
I wish that it was that simple to give you the answer you asked but I don’t see it that way... I may as well just flip a coin.

Pick a HP & Torque number you want.
A BASELINE.

400 Chevy wants air in & out.
Modern aftermarket heads makes it easier.

Very few want to port cast iron heads today.
Value is Low unless its Factory LS6 Rectangular Port BBC.
Or Pontiac RAIV Heads.
 
Lowest cost: rebuilt heads: 900 € with accuiacquiring ( was 300 €)....

Need to verify the condition of the Valveguides.
Often wore out in old engines.
Replacing valve guides is the most expensive part of rebuilding cast iron heads.
Valveseat inserts if needed.
 
Grumpy works with 6000-6200 rpm max Redline on street Pump gas engines.

If the 400 Chevy is using stock or cast rebuilder pistons I would keep the redline at 5500-5700.

Keith Black Hyper Pistons can push to 6200.
 
This pump gas engine or Race Gas 110 motor octane.?

They make real Danger Zone Race Cams for Pontiacs and Chevies.
Unless you have Titanium Valves, Ti Retainers, & Ti Valvelocks you really do not want to go there.
I have it.
 
We get into problems with High Rpm engines.
Valvetrain instability.
Premature valvefloat.
High piston speeds.
Durability issues.
Parts costs.

We work with Dynamic calculated compression ratios that work on the Street with 91-93 RM/2 pump gas.

High Rpms another factor comes into play effective compression ratio.
Really hard to prefict.
Only safe bet is run 110 Race fuel at least.

All 400 Small Block Chevies had cast iron cranks stock.
So we want to work in 5500-6200 rpm Redline.

Pontiac V8 had Cast Cranks too.
But Nodular iron in early engines up to 1971.
Mains bigger. Stiffer stronger crank.
Can push to danger zone with right parts and special oiling mods I do thats not online anywhere.
Will blow up otherwise.

Since you have a class and teaching your students best to gear for Fast street Fun.
