Hello everyone

Hi,
Just wanted to say Thanks for all the great information on 496ci big blocks.

Im knee deep into a build I should've did myself in the first place.

.015 thrust bearing end play on a motor with 2000k on it!! and had only see an 1/8 mile 5 times and 1/4 mile 4 times.
Bearing looks good 1.810 in three places, crankshaft between the thrust surfaces is 1.824
Not happy, when this started out as a head and Cam swap.

So new 4340 eagle Crank
ACL H series bearings,
AFR 290cc magnum oval port 112cc chamber heads, Spring pressure @ 145lbs at the seat 380lbs on the nose (per Howard's)
New Howard's hyd roller cam
RPM AIR GAP dual plane intake match ported, cam spec. 635/640 243 237 @ .05 LSA 112 and I'm bringing it in
At 108
Compression 10.93 :1
Dynamic compression 7.866:1
Quench. 043
FITECH meanstreet 800hp throttle body fuel injection,
20cc wiseco dome pistons
Dart Big M sportsman block
4.310 bore 4.25 stroker
4340 scat rods 6.385
Howard's stud girdles
My Virtual Dyno
Has me at 700.43hp @6600
And torque in at 612@ 4500
2"dia long tube Ceramic coating scavenger headder from flow master. And to top it off a 3" exhaust system from pypeps
Pro Race that flows 701cfm

I think it will be more like 670ish
Which is what I was shooting for in my 68 Camaro, it has a Ford 9" 3.73 gear all strange components , A built transmission 4l80e manual shift Valve body with a 2600 stall converter 10"drag slicks caltrack bars and a mono leaf spring , Calvert 9 way adjustable shock,
Hopefully high 10's
All info was based on 1250 feet above sea level.

The virtual dyno has me retarding the cam timing 4 deg which will bring me in at 108 correct?

Thoughts anyone
Or am I smoking crack

Should run faster than high 10s.
Need a higher stall torque converter I believe.
3800-4000 rpm.
They are terrible expensive for a 4L80e.
$2000 to start for a Real Good one.

Transbrake would help alot also.
Big $$$$ because its 4L80e.

More affordable with a TH 400.

You only want a 4L80e.
Powerglide.
Or a Turbo 400.
Nothing else will handle the BBC Stroker torque.

My toys
Hellcat and my 68 Camaro
People ask which one do I like best
I say both, that's why I have both...lol
They are two different animals
You drive the 68 the hellcat you are along for the ride..

Sell the 4L80E on Facedbook.
Some Pro Tour guy will buy it.

Been watching & waiting for 4L80E High RPM Stall Race winning torque converters to come down for 4 years.
Never Have.
Never will I think.

Chevy Guy with a Hellcat.
Or A Mopar Guy with a Hellcat.

I am a Pontiac V8 Guy with a Corvette.

Or a Corvette Guy with a Fast 1970-1/2 Trans Am RAIV 4- speed.

Welcome.

Normal aspirated Chevies like 4.10 gears.
You can try 3.73's & see how far down you get ET.

10's take a Big Power hit & traction.
Low Gears help you hookup despite what others may say.

4.10 or 4.30 be my pick for diff gears.

Swapping transmissions would be cost effective.
Turbo 400.
Oh I had a 400 in it, I bought 4l80e
To make it more driveable on long distances, I wanted a four speed transmission for the street so i didn't have to rap it out at 3k at 65mph, now at 70mph it's about 2700 rpm's
would have loved a four speed manual, but my ol knee won't take it.
I figured a street car with no roll cage
10.7 10.9 is fine I drive it more on the street then at the track
But if I was going full drag car it would have a powerglide in it for sure.

My best time with nitto drag radials, slapper bars 597 feet lb of torque and 557hp
Was 11.78
Now I revamped the whole thing
Not sure what it will run, the stuff I done
New 9 way Calvert shocks Calvert caltrack bars shimed the pig -3.5 degrees
Bought full Hoosier 10"x 28" drag slicks
To bite better. My plan was to move the torque curve up and air out this stump motor and using HP to carry me down the track.
Figured if I cut a good light keep my short time in the 1.5's get the car rolling good
And taking advantage of new mid range top end torque and hp to push me over the 11 second mark will make me happy, hell 10.99 would make me giggle in this old street car

Those Stroker Chevy Big Blocks make so much torque its hard to get the power down clean without a Big Tire 4-link layout or Ladder bars.
It can be done on a small tire car.
Work on the 60 foot times.
Them cut down Lower Ets will follow.

Oh you would like my buddy's 1969 fire chicken 400 ram air.
My son has a GTO I blow him smoke about paying half price for the same parts for my Chevy.

It all depends upon how you look at things.
If guys can not hookup clean you get by with less Hp
Win.
Has worked for me Street Racing.
I have beat Won against 9-second Track cars.
Just have to keep your Cool.
Focus.
Not miss a shift with the Muncie 4.
Come 3rd gear stretch at 6000 rpm I pass.

We are actually getting to far ahead right now.
You lost the Crankshaft Thrust bearing in your 496 BBC.
It happened not by accident.

There is likely torque converter ballooning taking place.
Excess line pressure is present likely also that coumpounds the problem expodential.
Turbo 400 I am very familiar with
Converter orfice mod is performed.
If 11-10 second using TRANSGO RACE SHIFT KIT WORKS.

Not up to date on all tricks done with 4L80e.
It does have a few weak areas that can be resolved.
Unfortunately its not google searchable because tricks are kept secret.

Best place is Facebook Group Transmission 101.
I am there.
It has the Reid Case TH400 for a home page picture.
And dozens of failed 700R4 & 4L60E 2-4 drums fried burnt up in the background.

Guys can be dicks.
But they are testing ya.
Pay no attention.

My son tried to talk me into a LS swap
But there's just something about that old big block in a old car that just fits.
I see all these fart can

I had the transmission built by animal performance out of Florida it has a anti ballooning torque transgo manual valve body TCI input and output shaft it's built for 900hp ,
No the problem on crank is it was junk to begin with, this engine was built by Skipwhite , bearing was 1.810 checked in three places crank was 1.824 now if it had a transmission issue the bearing would be shot. Crankshaft was grounded over from scat and they just (one thru it in and didn't bother to check it)( or they check it and said oh well.) ether way it should have never left the shop.
Stock bearing size 1.810 on thrust
So it was definitely crank.
