283 for 1/8 mile and street

Hi, I’ve been reading a lot of great info on this site. I’m working on putting together a new combo for my 64 chevelle which I do drive on the street, but am taking 1/8 mile performance more seriously. While I’ve put together successful street combos in the past using pretty basic setups, this engine will be my first small cubic inch and more race oriented. I will have to very carefully match parts to achieve excellent performance. Im going to provide some info below which may help narrow down what to look for in cylinder head choice. Here is info on the car:
1964 Chevelle Malibu
3380 race weight
12 bolt 4.56 gears
Auto gear m23 2.56 1st
26x 10.5 et streets .

Here are some intended specs for the engine:
3.935 bore x 3.00 stroke
Approx 13.5:1 comp
Will run on E85
Solid roller cam specs TBD Based on requirements of heads
Single plane intake TBD based on head/cam choice.
With the relatively low gearing and short tire, im not too worried about sacrificing low rpm performance if there is potential for excellent high rpm power.

I cannot run intake valves larger than 1.94 due to the small bore. Ive been thinking about possibly getting a bare set of trick flow super 23 175 heads with 56cc chambers, but could use advice if those would be a capable head for a small cubic inch high rpm engine.

Grumpy will tell you right away to build a 383, 400 sbc, or 406.

If you want a 283 SBC and serious about racing it I would use Titanium valves for 7,000- 9,000 Rpm operation.
 
406 SBC built right will have almost a 200Hp more advantage over a 283.
Race Fuel Fed Each .
110 motor octane gas.
E85 Fuel.

I won't build a true Race Engine for myself without Manley Titanium Intake and Exhaust Valves.
Need Berrylenium Copper seats in aluminum heads.
Factory Vintage Iron Heads like Pontiac 1970 RAIV 614 heads cast seats perfect match for Titanium valves too.
 
Large Torque motors Drag Race True do not have to Rev as hard.
7,000 Rpm sufficient most of the Time.
Still want Titanium Valves.
 
Thanks for the input. There’s no doubt that more cubic inches can outperform a small inch motor for less money and at lower rpm. In this case, I’m sticking with a 283 based engine. The plan to run high compression and high rpm w solid roller cam and light weight valve train has good potential for strong performance. I’m at a sticking point w cylinder head choice since my bore size and use of domed pistons will limit intake valve size to 1.94. Im currently spending a lot of time looking up relevant threads
and reading through the linked articles concerning cylinder head theory
 
Trickflow makes a New and improved reproduction of the Famed Double Camel Hump Heads.
Recall 1.94 intake valve face.

Have the Chevy Vortech 350 Heads 1996-1999.
Used also to 2001 in Gasoline ISUZU Cab over 350 Vortech Delivery Trucks.
I have the Vortech 350 in my 1999 Chevy Tahoe daily driver.
Keeps up with the Chevy Truck 6.0 LS out on the highway.
 
I am NOT going to try to talk you out of building your 283.
The trick flow super 23 175 heads with 56cc chambers are a good choice.
But you can run 2.02/1.60 with World Products S/R Torquer 305 heads.
The valve locations are moved to better work with the small bore size of the 305 (3.736").

Look at the pictures. I notched the top of the bores to aid the airflow.
These heads can be had in bare form CHEAP. But you will have to do some porting work.

Thanks for the advice, do you have the small bore stroker installed in the car yet? I’ve spoken w a couple cam manufactures and consensus is that a 1.94 intake won’t kill Performance and with some port work the super 23 can support the power and rpm goals when matched to an appropriate solid roller and supporting valve train parts. I had originally considered running a tunnel ram, then started looking into a 1x4 single plane, partially for budget reasons (a pair of alcohol prepped carbs is a lil spendy). I save money for this project when I can so tunnel ram certainly isn't out of the question. I need to connect w racers/builders with hands on experience wringing power out of high winding, high compression small cube sbc. I’m excited about this version of my car and really value the linked info on this site
 
Love302 is right, have seen a couple 305s built with the block notched like that to use 2.02 valves and it works pretty good. I would think it would work better with the larger 283 bore.
