Any experience with MSD 6 AL-2 Progammable box?

Did you use units with advance? What space in inches I need on top of the intake? SBC
Yes I like using the advance on the street.
6 or 12 degree advance. Either works fine.
Full race its locked out.
Be 7000-9000 rpm range. Mainly Dirt track racing here.

Dig out a Chevy Vertex Mag I have.
Measure for you & post photo later today here.

You must have a really good battery for reliable starts & fresh starter motor.
High Torque 10 MT.
Mini starter top notch.

Recommend Optima Red Top.

High Amp Alternator I recommend too so battery is 100 % charged at all times.

CS144 High Amp Alternator is my personal choice.
One on my Corvette too.

They work fine stock.
I upgrade them with Transpo parts.

So Good Starter.
Optima Red Top Battery New.
Charge output cable I use is #0 welding wire fine strand 100% copper.

Starter and ground cables are #00 welding cables used on Semi Diesel trucks.

Custom CS144 1 wire High Amp Alternator I built too.

Makes for 100% Reliable starts every time with a Vertex Mag in my 1963 Gp.

I still have a high torque mini starter.
The Alternater is a 60 amp version.
Battery is 5 years old.
So a new battery and higher amp Alternator must be added to the list...

Ok.
Just a checklist.
For warning my own personal experience.
I street drive alot too.

Your car is a Muncie 4.
If battery is dead like headlights left on it will still push start with a Vertex Mag.
Magnetos generate thier own Alternating current power once the mag is turning.
Put the car in 2nd gear.
Hold in the clutch.
Once rolling 10-15 mph let the clutch out.
She will pop light off and be running.
Granted you have a mechanical fuel pump.
Some alternators will take off once spinning and charge with a dead battery.
Old GM Delco generators did.
Like stock 1955-1962 Chevy and Pontiac had.

yes magnetos generally prefer a .024-.030 gap on the spark plugs
that does not result in less effective spark or igntion

I will think about the magneto. Sounds simple and great. Maybe I will give me one magneto as christmas present for myself ;)
I will throw out my mechanical fuel pump in the next days. The electrical is ordered.
Yes Muncie 4 Speed is in.

I tried 98 octane fuel today instead of 95. Tank was empty. It sounds and feels a little better, no pinging. We also have 100 and 102 octane fuel on some gas stations, but very expensive. All our fuel rates have 5% ethanol in it.

Gasoline is expensive here too.
Not as bad as Europe but it's high for us.
Running cruising on 87 R/M2 Pump gas is in if possible.

E85 is $1.99 per gallon local.
87 octane E10 is $2.76 per gallon local today.

You can buy a used Chevy Vertex Magneto.
Find on ebay.
Plan on Rebuilding.
Some are 50-70 years old now.
They get alot to rebuild the long time Mag service guys.
I am reasonable.

The New Vertex Mags are all billet.
Old original was aluminum with a Steel lower section.
Think original style stronger.
Can spot Vintage that way too.
It's whatever you want.
Mag rebuild parts are expensive.
No way around that.
Costs me good money to buy Vertex parts.
Buying the Best made ever.
Only way to prove is try a Vertex Mag yourself.

Most used Vertex Mags are for Chevrolet V8.
Mint pristine Value to buy is $600-650-800.
Used in need of rebuild $300-400 a good value.
Vertex mag for a Pontiac V8 or Olds V8 are ultra rare.
$900-1200 a good buy as is condition found. Those not made since mid to late 1960's.
Paid top dollar for Pontiac and Olds myself.
Chevy When I buy I look for good deals.
Tan Cap original I prefer.
1950s & 60's vintage.
Historical to me and others.
Blue cap is late 1970s and 1980s.
VERY Good too.

I know that it will cost me around $1.200 to get a magneto.
I saw one yesterday here in germany on ebay. It's a Mallory unit.
https://www.ebay.de/itm/SBC-BBC-OFF...506716?hash=item282ae780dc:g:-6EAAOSwUKxYmL5A
It is uncommon that you see one here in germany on ebay.

95 octane - $6.40 / gallon. Lowest octane here in germany. In the past we had 87 octane.
95 with 10% ethanol - $6.28, no one want this here.
98 - $6,75
102 - $7,46
That is an Old Mallory Super Mag IV.
It has Rare Earth Magnets.
Offset Blower Drive Base.
For use on Large Supercharger 8-71, 11-71- 14-71.
Made for Supercharged Nitro Methane Use.

Nitro is very hard to light off.
Only a Magneto has the True Amperage delivered at the spark plug gaps to do it with Nitro.

Some Guys used Mallory Super Mags Racing the Bonneville Salt Flats In Wendover Utah.

Vertex OAC is made for continuous use.
Like Street driving - racing at will.

Some Mags will overheat after several minutes use because they are made for Drag Use Nitro.
3-5 seconds at a time.

Mallory Super Mag is a good Magneto yet.

You Need 9-1/4" inches clearance between the Wiper motor on your 1955 Chevy & the machined pad on the intake manifold for a Vertex OAC Magneto to clear.

Vertex Made single & Dual Magneto Offset Drives.
Gilmore Belt Drive Units on Ball bearings.
Very Rare now.
Expensive.
Not for the faint of heart used to low cost MSD stuff.

The Vertex OAC Mag on my 1970TA Just Clears the functional shaker hoodscoop.
Maybe 1/4" clearance room to spare.

Mechanical Tach drives are a 1/2" inch taller checking today.

I have maximum 8.5" with spark plug wires between top of intake to bottom wiper motor. For diameter there is max 4.5" space to the firewall. I checked it today.
So no space for a magneto or I have to extend the drive of the wiper motor. There is no option to cancel the wiper motor, it is not street legal here.

The offset magneto drives are an option.
Pricey when found used,

They make front magneto drives driven direct off the camshaft on the front of the engine.
Alky digger is one supplier.
He does not give the stuff away at low cost.

I hear You.
Working windshield wipers is must have for me too on the street.

The diameter of Verex Mags is similar to stock GM points ignition.
Forget diameter but its not huge like GM HEI.

I do not know 1955-57 Chevies well and wiper motor options .
Delete just a bad idea, not a drag strip only car.
