vertex ignitions

What does it cost to rebuild a Vertex mag?
It varies upon the condition and age of the Vertex Magneto.
I am not sure what others get.
Bill taught me how to rebuild them.
Like a Secret society & sworn oath you do not disclose secrets. No one does online.
$400 - 500 in parts often required.
I can not give a full assessment till the Vertex magneto is in my hand.
Full inspection.
Spin test on my SUN distributor machine.
Teardown & inspect all.

Most found are worth rebuilding.

Once rebuilt by me they will work for another 50 -100 years.

Also a Doomsday Ignition.
It will work after a Nuclear Blast.
MSD will not and & nothing else will.

Mags were used in all WW2 Allied Planes for a good reason.
Able to withstand Direct Lighting Hits in the sky.
Happens to MSD your going down to the ground & explode on sudden impact.

I think I’m going to look for one. It will look good behind a polished blower.
OK.

I like the Vintage Tan Cap & Blue Cap Vertex mags myself but all are decent.
Lots of History in those old Vertex Mags. Most survived Ok if not kept in a damp wet area.

Just have to watch for deals. Even though the one I bought is missing a screw on the cap and I don't know anything else about the condition with a freshen I could have a like new mag for several hundred less than new.

When did the blue caps come about? I was curious how the color will work with my build.

1970's into the early 1980's the Blue Cap Ronco Vertex Magnetos were built.
Most were Chevrolet V8 Models.

Vertex Mags were used on Harley Davidsons too.
Karta Magnetos. Very Kool.
Usually for Nitro methane Harley Race use at the track.
It was very expensive new.

Have one of those special Harley Vertex Mag caps New NOS.
2 different firing orders used in a Harley Davidson.
Why it has that unique sound.

I just bought another WW2 Vintage original Warbird Magneto Switch Grumpy.
Similar to the one I have in the 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix.
They are made best with Sliver plated contacts.
The British made WW2 Warbird Mag switches too..extreme rare valuable.
The Allied Forces.

One I bough just now was for a Dual Radial Warbird. Maybe P38 Lightning.

Get pics when it comes in.
It's Super Kool.
For the 1970 Trans Am with its Race Vertex Mag I use.

Only 1 NHRA approved Magneto cutoff switch to mount on the rear of the car to meet safety rules.
Made by Longacre.
It's expensive $145.
Battery cutoff switch integrated in too.
Researched last night.
On my bucket list to buy.

Warbird Mag switch for drivers cockpit.

I know this an old thread, my apologizes for resurrecting it. I have a 1953 Chevy pickup truck that the previous owner (now deceased) had installed a Vertex magneto, McCulloch supercharger (from a 1959 Studebaker Golden Hawk), and a Hallibrand quick change rear end. I'm in the process of finishing the restoration/refurbishment with a few modern touches (power disk brakes, etc) but want to retain the Vertex magneto.

It looks like it too could use resuscitation and while there is a Don Zig plate on it, my calls to Don Zig have gone unanswered and today the voice mail said that the mail box was full. I thought having them do a clean and rebuild made sense given their name on the plate, but maybe they are out of business and don't do that anyone, thus no return phone call and a full mailbox. Does anyone have any info on Don Zig and/or a reference they can give to an alternative?

Many thanks in advance.

Bob

theres no need to apologize , for use of older thread I do it very frequently
almost any place that rebuilds vertex mags can refresh your, vertex mag regardless of who previously worked on you magneto,
but its never cheap and rarely done rapidly

I guess the answer will be at what cost will I retain the magneto. While I'd like to keep it for old times sake, if the cost of refurbishing it exceeds the cost of a new GM HEI distributor for my inline 6 cylinder engine, I'll have to reconsider. From what I've seen online the value of the magneto on eBay is shocking.
