64 chevelle dissection/resurrection

Been dragging my feet here lately but I took some time today and got one step closer to blasting. Cleaned the floor and got a majority of the cracks in the floor and edges on the canopy taped. Filled the blaster and also picked up a tyvek suit.

I really like the picture detail, and the fact youve thought through the need to clean the wok area, and provide debris deflecting curtains , and lighting for the working area,
so many times I see guys not think things through, resulting in paint , solvent, being used contaminating the shop, out side the immediate work areas,
, or sand blasting trash spreading all over the adjacent work related areas.

Don't forget POR15 Rust preventative paint.
Some guys like Rust Bullet.
POR15 you brush on or you can spray with a gun.

Epoxy Paint for areas you see .

Grumpy, containment was my ultimate goal and the tent did what it was supposed to. Right now I cant say I'm very happy with the cheap harbor freight blaster as it wasn't working very well (I expected it) for the 5 mins I was in there. I called it quits almost immediately as not to let my temper run wild. I'm going to do some youtube surfing for what people did to improve the blaster.

The more CFM the air compressor can put out the better.
Need at least 18 cfm to glass bead or sand blast I have read in the past.

yes your hardly the first nor will you be the last guy to find a great deal of the crap HF sells, is VERY sub standard quality, but its not all crap,
EXAMPLE,
I've had (6) 12 ton jack stands in my shop for 35 plus years and they still work just fine.

a couple decent values in wrenches (not saying they are great quality, but they are certainly a decent value for the price.)

sand blast cabinet for small parts

My brother in law purchased this

https://www.harborfreight.com/5000-lbs-black-aluminum-oxide-70-grit-abrasive-media-61870.html

too help remove rust from some parts, like bolt threads , under his car , its slow but it works at removing the majority of the accumulated corrosion
its no where near pro grade but the price reflects that and for small jobs its functional

keep in mind the compressor you hook any sand blaster too has a huge effect on its function, we used his with my dual compressores with the car up on jack stands out in front of my shop, it was very slow work but it eventually got the job we were doing with it done.

I really like Gasoline powered air compressors.
I found some Monsters on Craigslist.
Big as my 18 foot car trailer.

Look around you.
You can put a gasoline engine on near any air compressor.

I recall I spent about $650 on my gasoline air compressor & $200 to get ready to Blast - Glass Bead.
Might find better deals near you.

The air MUST be dry. You don't need an elaborate filter setup or air dryer.
Sometimes all that is needed is to slightly crack open the drain at your filter.
Or the tank drain.

I'll have to see how it works out. Today probably wasnt a good day to try being the humidity is up. Just wanted to see how it would work out and now I'll go back and tweek the blaster and make it better with any luck. One of the other issues I was having was my hood was fogging up. I'd hate to heat the area as 40 degrees with a tyvek suit still turns into a sweat suit for me. Feel like I might need some kind of forced air hood as wearing it not only makes the lens fog but also wearing a respirator is equivelant to holding a pillow over my face. Feels like I'm suffocating.

Well I'm back at it again.

Been screwing with this blaster for two days trying to get it figured out. I think my biggest issue right now is the size of the media. Like an idiot I got a bunch of coarse rather than fine media. I've only used one bag and have just sifted and reused it several times and it seems to run better the more times I've ran it.

3 of my other issues are:

1. I cannot get this dang thing to run consistantly. It may be the size of the media still but its either to much or not enough media coming through. When it comes through heavy it still works but then its just wasting media and reduces the run time. If I cut the feed valve back a smidge it'll run good for a few seconds then clear out and then it doesnt send any through. No happy medium.

2. As if getting the blaster fine tuned isn't hard enough seeing is another problem. I can't hold my breath for 5 mins so the mask keeps fogging up. About as effective as looking through a milk jug. I was thinking about hitting the inside with some rainx. Any cost effective solutions?

3. Last but not least sifting. It's time consuming yes and I expect it to be. The issue isnt the time but the dust. I use one size screen to sift and thats takes about an hour to get through. Am I left with just buying several different size screens or does anyone have and alternate way of removing the extreme fines? I did pour tht media from one bucket to another infront of a shop fan and it worked a little but it left a pretty good size mess beyond the bucket.

At any rate I am trying to get something done. I switched jobs and now work a 7 on 7 off schedule that leaves me with more time to work on stuff at the cost of working an 80 week every other week.
I've got plans to get this car all blasted this year and to get a majority of the cancer repaired. I even checked with a local shop (the only one we have) that could do it for $75hr and estimated 10hrs based on what I told him I had. But this kind of work isn't their bread and butter so they said it could take a while to do everything as their other stuff would come first.

Anyways back to work.

I have a US Government certified miners sifting screen I use for sifting.

The quality of blast media is everything.
Top Notch quality is $80-$100 per 40-50lbs .
Like Black diamond coal Slag for steel.
Glass beads best but expensive.

Get some links together for blast media options.
Top Quality glass beads to blast an entire Chevelle likely to coat $500 + .

See if my Sifting screen is in the garage to where I left it last year.
Should be.
