I would bet Grumpy has a link to what is (or one of) the best known Trouble Code reader/scanner and does it come with an ABS reader? I have an 04 5.3, 06 DuraMax, and I'm assuming the 06 Toyota uses the same OBDII and ABS readers as the domestic cars. I also have an 03 Jeep that you just turn the ignition key on and off 2.5 times and the code shows on the Speedo gage - wish others did this too.

96+ is OBD2 and 96- is OBDI but sometime there was OBD2 in 94-95 too.
OBDI can be scanned with a paper clip on pin a and b and count the SES light blink (long pause are to separate the DTC code)or a 10$ uart(ttl) to usb converter compatible with 8192 baud rate.

I use my LM-2 for scanning OBDII thats because i had a LM-2 for the camaro, so i cant tell what good scanner to buy.

Someone Pat me on the back, I didn’t start a new thread for an old topic :p. It’s nearly 9 years later and I’ve been using an Actron Plus but it’s outdated even after the internet uploading of their newest updates.

Without spending a small fortune, can anyone* recommend a good reader that can also clear the codes both on the reader and the car and perhaps a bell or whistle maybe?

Please remember Brian, I don’t have your deep pockets for high end tools and equipment

Just use the same Scanner you have.
The pro shop scanners used to make a living with are unaffordable for near Everyone.
$2000-15,000+

No, can’t. I have one car (maybe 2) way too new for that scanner right now and quite possibly adding another in a year or two. I refuse to believe there’s nothing feasible in sub $500 range for a scanner/code reader. Geeze, they have phones that hold 500 apps and the computational power to weigh the mass of a solar flair for less than $500!

Your at the Mercy of Auto manufacturers.
Everything is programmed now.
Dealer only typical.
For Independent small shops to buy the Scanner and be setup reprogram its $15,000 cash plus.

Buy old cars .
Tuned Port EFI
TBI.
Vortech 350 5.7.

Cars and trucks with Carburators bypass all the expensive Headaches what I do.

I forgot about the Avalon. That’s another PITA! Did you see what you must do to replace a dam fuel filter? It’s insane!
It pissed me off to find out today there was an easy way to drain the fuel tank (on the Prius) that I could’ve done in 10 min. Instead it took me a whole afternoon for even half the tank because you can’t fish a siphon hose down to the tank and short of drilling a hole in the tank to let it drain, I’d have to remove a labyrinth of fuel lines, wiring and 18 nuts and bolts.
Instead I could have removed the seat cushion in the rear, and with a few minutes of work, a $20 specialty hand tool I could have pulled the fuel pump, gauge sending unit/filter out leaving a big wide opening in the top of the tank - I could use a “Big Gulp” cup to bail out every drop of the old fuel - If I wanted too!

Even dipsticks will be a thing of the past soon. Everything will be accessible by secrete squirrel code using a combination of pushes on buttons. Hit the clock button 3 times, the ignition button 5 times, and hum a few bars of Aerosmith’s “Dude looks like a lady!” And the car will tell me how much change is under the seat

That is most European cars no engine oil dipstick any.
Oil level sensor in the pan that always fails all blow up because they ran out of engine oil.

Trouble is Finding old cars and trucks to save in good shape overall.

Yeah, then try to find parts for them. Junk yards are just metal recycling centers now and parts places sell only 1988 and newer parts. I go into AdvanceA—- and they never heard of T400 or TH400’s - never mind “what’s a big block?”

Your Old like Me.

I think I found a decent reader with features discounted to $129.00 with battery, Alt functionality tester.
I couldn’t figure out how to copy the whole listing. It goes on to list the operations and features. To see more you have to go on Amazon.4DA346DC-B711-4671-97A8-1112A7429D00.png
