Anyone want to suggest a cam?

1987 350 basically a stock Corvette engine. (it came out of my Vette)
9.5:1 compression ratio
Aluminum heads 1.94 intake valves 1.5 exhaust
turbo 350 trans with a 2800 stall
355 rear end with 26" tall tires. Might go to 28" tall. (uncertain)
tunnel Ram intake with 2 Holley 390's

It ran good as a stock set up in my old T Bucket but it is going into a heavier car and I'd like to have a bit more power. Open to suggestions.

Thanks.

crane 119571 hydraulic roller cam
Good mid range torque and HP, fair idle, moderate per- formance usage, serious off road, mild bracket racing w/ heavy car, auto trans w/2500+converter,
3000-3800 cruise RPM
,9.5 to 10.75 compression ratio advised.

a 11532-16b
230 292 108 12 38 .000 .528
238
300 52 6 .000 .548

run this through your desk top dyno

it should provide about the max you can reasonably expect from that combo
on the street youll almost always find that the lower duration cam in the choice between two similar cams will in the long term be a slightly more useful choice.
(the simple reason why is that most street cars spend the vast majority of the time operating well below 4500-5000 rpm, and lower and mid rpm torque not peak hp is used far more often) it hardly makes sense to build any engine to produce its peak power in the rpm range you,ll rarely use. and the extra duration will generally reduce the low and mid rpm torque you use the vast majority of the time, in exchange for a bit more peak power you'll rarely access.

why not call crane and talk to their tech guys ,
and if its what you want,
after all your questions get answered,

have them ship it to you,
thats what Ive done frequently in the past
summit, jegs and most places have the cam listed for about the same price,
so deal direct with CRANE!
don,t forget you want matched hydraulic roller lifters, and valve springs,
and that youll need too verify all valve train and valve too piston ,clearances
Its not cheap, but its good quality and
Ive been running a very similar crane 119661 for over 12 years without issues
but keep in mind ITs not been a daily transportation, and probably has less than 30K miles,
BTW if you want some giggles, it will work very effectively,
with that cam timing, with the longer exhaust duration, works great,if you have long tube headers and a low restriction exhaust
, if you got a dual WET nitrous plate system,
under those dual quads on that tunnel ram intake

why not call the tech dept at all five cam manufacturers linked below, and get their input,
(without discussing or letting anyone at those individual tech departments, know you talked to other sources
.what any other cam manufacturer might have said in any way)
write down the cam specs they suggest, lift duration and lsa,

then average the results and
select the cam thats the closest match, to that average , of the 5 cams that were suggested.

crane (386)310-4875

crower 619.661.6477

erson 800-641-7920

lunati..662-892-1500

ISKY 323.770.0930

what your basically trying to do is to maximize operational compression,
over the useful rpm range
(this maximizes the torque curve efficiency,)
but, while keeping that cylinder pressure under the detonation threshold

Grumpy, I didn't know you could deal directly with them. I'll give them a call. Also not ready for nitrous yet but if things go as planned I am going to go that route down the road.
What are your thoughts on this cam?

•RPM Range - 1800-5800
•Advertised Duration - 278/288
•Duration at .050 - 219/229
•Lift -.503/.503 W/1.5 Rockers .536/.536 W/ 1.6 Rockers
•LSA/ICL - 112/108
•Valve Lash - Hyd

I can get a pretty good deal on that new from a guy I know. Just don't know how it would fit with my engine.

Thanks Loves302Chevy PM sent.

that cam would be fine if your intent was more toward a daily driver,
as it would produce a little better off idle and similar mid range torque,
but it would give up a bit of peak power
and it would certainly fade well below,
the effective peak power potential and rpm of that tunnel ram intakes flow,
keep in mind the t-rams going to flow best in the 3500 rpm-6500 rpm range,
that smaller cams going to start struggling near 5300 rpm

Crane used to have separate listings for nitrous camshafts. I can't find them on their website.
I bet Grumpy has a list. Were you looking for HYD, HYD roller, MECH, or MECH roller?

Hyd. Roller. I looked at that cam because I'm cheap. LOL. I guess I'll have to dip further into my wallet.
