My Chevelle build and spot to Rant

So I continued my body work down to the quarter panels to prepare to skim coat and block sand to prepare to paint well the can of worms is allot bigger then I thought seems some where in this cars lifetime a bondo sculptor owned or worked on this. The hole was filled with filler and never knew it existed looks like a partial patch was installed there also. I will explain each picture. check under picture for explanation. Pics taken with phone still need new cameras on my phone next time I get to work on it will use dslr.

Filler on the corner is grinded away 1/4" deep at minimum you can see the patch metal along with some welds. Was disappointed to say the least to find this but better now then after painting the whole car. I am assessing the damage here to come up with a well thought out plan to attack this.

Not only another picture of the corner but you can see the patch panel welded across panel this was buried under at least a 1/2" of filler and the body line of the patch panel is a 1/2" lower then where it should be. The cut line at the bumpers corner is where that body line should be or at least start. If you look farther down the panel you can see the filler body line. It was at this point I decided it's time to step back and strategically strip in areas to make a decision on how to handle this poor repair.

My finger is on the patch panel body line and you can see the gradient build of filler how much is there. I will probably gain a 10th losing the weight of that filler. lol:confused:

the patch panel is tacked and sealed on there they overlapped it to the existing panel tacked it sealed it and built it up. I wonder if the patch panel just did not fit properly or what they were thinking here. But I was fooled in thinking it was a proper fic from the patch on the inside. o_O

I dug in here to see if the patch body line lined up on the door side. Still allot of filler here but body line is lined up with the door.:(

A dig in between where I stripped and the door to gauge the depth of filler and how bad is the continuing issue. I need to go look in the inside of the panel to see where exactly the patch panel goes to.:(

This is the drivers side to see if the problem was solely the fix on the passenger side. But seems that it is both sides and 1/2" of filler. So it comes down to I think surgery is in order.

I have been exploring my options here and feel my best one is replace the full quarters here. Not the cheapest option but the easiest and best fix. This is a decent video of the process. I will try to document the process as I complete the work. Setback hit money for finishing the new engine to be spent here. :(

Ive worked on hundreds of body repairs and minor body mods on standard cars like chevelles and camaros , GTO, lemans, and road runner's cudas etc.
rust damage is a huge P.I.T.A.

a plazma cutter and a mig or tig welder and a donor car or at least the matching panels would be a huge help.

If you were close and local Id like to help, just so I could see whats required and perhaps help, but I have the feeling you might even be better at that then I am,
one of the few advantages working on corvettes have

is theres no potential for rust on body panels
either smc or fiberglass may have several other problems,
but rust fortunately is not the major issue.

The Corvette began production in 1953. The body panels are made from fiberglass and resin using two basic methods and continuously improved over the years. These methods are referred to as "press molded panels" and "sheet molded composites" or SMC.

Press Molded Panels
Press molded panels were produced from 1953 through the 1972 model year. The fiberglass and resin were hand laid or sometimes sprayed into molds. These molds were then heated and placed under very high pressure. This process resulted in panels having a uniform thickness and finish.

SMC
SMC panels were produced from 1973 to the C6 model. SMC panels were created from heated high pressure molds that compress a mixture of fiberglass, resin and catalyst. This new process created panels that were much smoother than press molded panels, provide tighter tolerances and a superior finish.

Carbon Fiber
Carbon fiber was used on some C6 ZR1 panels. The hood, front spoiler and roof panels were all made using carbon fiber composites. Carbon fiber panels were significantly stronger and lighter than SMC or press molded fiberglass panels. Carbon fiber had a greater tensile and compressive strength than fiberglass at a lower density resulting in stronger panels at lower weights.

Damn..... I wish I had half the skills you have with body work and painting.

Nice work!

Thank god I don't have to do much in that area!

Better pics as promised had to run up to my parents to lift something they couldn't even got some pics from in the trunk it would seem they had the driver side right but flattened out so much. I could repair this but quarters and rear panel will the action I take here I just cannot push myself to do it half ass. I feel it is a strong suit and weakness of mine or at least my wallet. See post below of last airbrush painting I finished.

update car is all cut up since last year new AMD quarters inner and outer wheel housings and trunk floor being installed I like things done right

yes the cover up was pretty deep and had held up nice from the previous owner but was not up to my quality of work. I have a bunch of pics to share along with more progress either way hopefully by the summer is out it will be road ready again allot of work with new fuel system and full body paint and rust repair.

Cannot wait, another big storm on the way the new cooper AT3s on the bronco put in work this year locked the hubs but didn't have to hit the switch. Love that truck

I am not scared new sheet metal to be installed trunk floor, trunk floor braces, trunk drop down, inner and outer wheel housing, sail panel, and full quarters. Most is already purchased and I get down on body work and am pretty quick at it. Good weather can't come quick enough. I have not decided on a color yet but
