I got asked what would be the ideal hog hunting rifle

I could obviously give you my ideal selection,
but the truth is that its shot placement and bullet selection,
almost regardless of the rifle you use,
that are by far the most important factors.
in most of FLORIDA on private land hogs are considered VERMIN, like RATS,
they breed very rapidly, they tear up crops,
lawns and kill off a good deal of the quail, rabbits and even small deer at times.
I've heard of farmers willing to pay you to kill and remove hogs,
if you'll use archer equipment which they consider to be far less likely to cause accidents.
they cause in excess of $7 million dollars a year in damage to florida farmers

I'd point out the guys I've hunted with regularly seem to prefer,
the shorter length carbine repeaters, with medium power cartridges,
like the marlin 44 mag ,30/30 and 35 rem , lever actions,
and more than a few guys have used ar 15, semi auto 7.62/39 sks, or pump 12 ga with slugs.

In my experience shots over 40 yards are rather rare and shots under 20 yards are the norm.
(this is why hand guns like the 44 mag, 357 mag and 41 mag, and 10mm, are also popular)
damn near anything works if you are a decent shot, simply because a hog shot in the brain or neck vertebra tends to drop. shoot one in the heart or lungs or liver and its just as fatal ,
but you,ll be tracking that hog some distance before he falls most of the time.

(not always a good idea as most hogs like thick cover during day light)if they run any significant distance, its making finding a mortally hit hog more difficult
Ive helped several younger people start hunting, Id suggest you take a hunter safety course
(most state game/fish departments have them)
rent , borrow or buy a dozen related firearm care, and proper use,and training videos,
buy and watch a game processing videos
rent borrow or buy a couple dozen hunting tips videos, ideally find an experienced mentor.
obviously you need to become familiar with weapon care, maintenance, proper use and proficiency.
I would not buy a rifle or shotgun, until youve tried several types and calibers/ gauges,
and become rather familiar with and at least become proficient with a few.
get out and walk the local game management areas.
youll need a freezer to store a great deal more meat than the average kitchen refrigerator/freezer holds,
you may be thinking only about a rifle, but a used 870 12 ga shotgun can be very useful and theres millions of them out there,
you should have zero problem finding one used or on sale fairly reasonably priced, under $300 and with slugs,
for deer/hogs and properly sized bird shot for small game
its fully capable of keeping the freezer full in semi competent hands

yes, I have a 7600 35 whelen, that I purchased as a camp back-up gun,

a rifle thats been in constant use , when guys in elk camp,
have issues like fogged scopes and loose mounts, and don,t bring a back-up
and that rifles use has resulted in 4 people purchasing a similar rifle after using it...
.Im sure it would be even more if the 35 whelen/7600 pump guns were currently easy to find now ,
as they seem to have been discontinued

btw \54 grains of ww748 under a speer 250 grain, is lethal on elk
ranges tend to be short in florida brush

the speer 150 grain expands well, its lethal, on hogs and deer, 46 grains of WW748 and a fed 215 primer works and produced very good accuracy in several m1a rifles and bolt actions
you don,t need that much power but its damn effective
