air filters

use of a decent quality air filter will significantly reduce engine wear in most environments, as it prevents a great deal of outside dust and grit from entering the engine, and getting introduced to moving components, the standard muscle car air filter was about a 14" diam and 2" -2.5" tall filter similar to this one

in a box similar to this one

but many guys found the more open look like this preferable

swapping to a 3" filter element if you had the required hood clearance generally resulted in a bit less restriction and a bit more horsepower
COOLER AIR is denser and contains a bit more oxygen and tends to reduce the tendency to detonate with marginal octane fue so routing outside air thru larger duct-work and limiting the hot engine compartment air from being inducted to the engine tends to help hp/tq

I recently got a call from a guy I know who wants to build a custom cowl induction hood but retain a low restriction air filter on his car, hes got a hundred option, but he never even considered having something custom fabricated.

you might be amazed at what some thinking and a tig welder, and some careful pattern making, measuring and test fitting with some card board and duct tape cam accomplish
many guys find they have hood clearance issues with a typical old school air filter, you can remotely mount the air filter and use custom duct work to route the filtered air to the carb or throttle body.
