ITS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TOO..
learn to use a decent caliber and bullet selection, for the application ,
and learn to shoot quickly and accurately from field positions,

and ITS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TOO..
learn to get into range where making the shot accurately is rather easy to do..
and if you do...youll seldom be bothered with the need to track game,
knowledge of the games anatomy is mandatory.

but reality is that your not always going to make the ideal shot!
so having some tracking skills certainly won,t hurt.
almost all tracking jobs can be avoided simply by not shooting,
until ,
your dead certain of shot placement and use of a rifle thats designed to do the job.

Ive helped several guys locate wounded game over the decades,
in almost every case it was a result of crappy shot placement,
you can,t just shoot at a deer or elk bounding through timber,
and expect precise shot placement ,
if the range is fairly long and your not fairly skilled.
for ELK Id suggest a 130-150 grain bullet in a 6.5 mm swedish mauser or 270 win as a reasonable minimum
for deer Id suggest a 243 win--257 roberts and a 100 grain bullet as a reasonable minimum.
yes a 357 mag-41 mag revolver with proper hand-loads in skilled hands,
or a 55 lb bow with razor sharp broad heads and proper shot placement..
will kill anything that walks in north america..
its not power its bullet construction and proper shot placement.
, power will not make up for bad shot placement.
yes you could get the job done with a bit less power,
but having a bit more penetration, bullet mass,
and range seldom hurts results

obviously check local game dept. regulations
having hunted with dozens of guys over 5 decades,
I would not suggest the average guy shoots game at ranges exceeding 250 yards,
with a rifle, or 30 yards with a bow,
or 40 yards with a hand-gun

you simply sight in, your rifle of choice,
off the bench at 100 yards, put the scope cross hair centered ,
(at 100 yards off the bench) on the yellow dot,
and have all the shots print over the smaller red dot,
SO THAT when you get out in the field, put the scope cross hair centered where the light green dot is on the deer or elk, diagram above,
it will produce a fatal wound out a bit past 250 yards,(well past any range youll need so no range calculations are required ,
if you can see clearly at low optic power, )
you sure don,t have to use this method or even agree ,
but I can assure you its resulted in a bunch of dead, deer or elk
