I always get a kick out of this one, the first Southern 500 mile race
was won by Johnny Mantz, driving a 1950 Plymouth, flat head six!!!

He beat all the Buick, Cadillac, Olds, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Nash, Studebaker competitors
and even the fabulous Hudson Hornets.!!!

Thanks
Randy

My son has a '49 slant back Plymouth that looks very similar and as the flat six with 3 speed on the column. All original car with less than 75,000 miles on it.

I have fond memories of those Plymouths as a 1950 Special Deluxe was the car my Dad let me drive when I was a kid.

They were very high quality, reliable, comfortable cars but certainly not fast.

Johnny Mantz only won because the faster Olds, etc. kept blowing tires, he just soldiered on without any mishaps.

The much faster Olds Rockets blew so many tires the racers had to "borrow" some from the spectators cars!!

Below is the receipt my Dad paid for a valve job on the 1950 Plymouth back in 1967.

Prices have crept up somewhat since then, $12.00 labor !!!!

Thanks
Randy

Shortly after that race the new 51 Hudson Hornets with the step down design dominated and were a force to be reckoned with. I had a Hornet a few years ago. I flipped it because restoring would have been a costly and long term undertaking I wasn't interested in doing. Thought about doing the rat rod/patina thing with it but decided I had more important things I could do. Sold it to someone in upstate NY, loaded it on a car carrier then off it went.
