1953 Chrysler 331 Hemi

It must be OE - from a Mopar of regular production or a service replacement.
No crate motors. There used to be a Mexico City, Mexico foundry that had the original castings, but Fiat sued and closed them since Fiat owns the Mopar trade marks. They were $17,599 Plus S&h. They suffered very low Ni content.

This engine has been for sale since 2012. The block and head (left side) is welded in several places. There is a faint bottom end click I didn't trust, especially since the owner had suspect abilities. I got the price down to $15,000 and backed out after I got the analysis report back on the oil, almost all additives.

yes you'll need to be cautious simply because theres about 5% to 10% of the people selling expensive engine parts, and especially used parts that I can only describe a SCAMMERS, and some guys find out their engine is terminal and try to move it off to be "someone elses headache" rather than accept the fact they screwed it up, or abused it, and their only thought is to regain as much of the original cost as they can and move on.
I posted about the time,
I was at a local engine shop, and the machinist came out and told some guy that was waiting,
that his 400 sbc block walls were so thin that a new rebore was very unlikely to leave enough steel to not have it crack....his response, was , "
ok, just clean it and paint it did sell it on ebay" and buy a new one!

It's a shame folks have to be that way. When you're dealing with a limited amount of anything it's likely that the price will be high or someone is just trying to make a buck.

So, my guess is , like me, you tend to scour cl?

Just curious, do you use a search engine called Zoom the List? It's a cl search tool that searches the entire database rather than just one city at a time. Theres a clone super bee in Atlanta with a 426. And theres a challenger in Chicago with a 426.

Exactly! When the first words you hear are "I'm selling this "as is"" Beware!
I like the blank look on the seller's face when he starts the engine and it's knocking so hard he says "What? Oh that! Well sometimes it does that on pump gas. All it needs is to retard the timing just a scohe and that will go away." BS,I know what a rod knock sounds like!
My all time favorite - in Winter Park, FL, 2010, looking at an LS-6 mounted on a bare chassis and the seller starts it up. After some hard revs he says he'll be right back. Minutes later the engine is smoking and I'm looking for the start button and I hear "click-clack, click-clack . . .boom!
The guy comes back and says "What did you do?" There was a bulge in the pan with the rod end coming through. "It was fine before I left!" I didn't waste a moment getting out of that yard!

If you Haggerty Insurance they have a parts locator service for members. I just make a list and wait for an email with a brief description and a number. Sometimes it's a CL posting, an auction or even a Hemmings News.
