1965 Olds 425 V8 Hotrod Magazine November 1964

I fixed the Speedometer in.the '63 GP Tonight.
Installed a NOS GM SPEEDOMETER CABLE REPAIR KIT. $15.00 Free ship from an ebay seller.
He had it put away in his garage for 40 years.
425 Olds V8 is running Flawless.
Drives so nice.
Super torque a tap of the gas pedal away.
I am averaging 15-18 miles per gallon driving 55-80 mph.
No overdrive Turbo 400 Trans & 3.23 gears in the 9.3 Differential.
 
I am taking my 1963 Widetrack Grand Prix to Joliet today Grumpy.
Be 150 miles roundtrip approximately .
The Corvette runs Flawless .

I eliminated the Seperate Power Steering belt on the Olds 425.
One single V-belt is running the Water pump, Power Steering pump, & Alternator.
I am upgrading to a Double V-groove alternator pulley soon.
Be a Layout like Buick 455's had, Cadillac 472-500, & 440 Mopars.
Much better belt alignment with the 12si Alternator I am using.

Open exhaust still.
Ed will hear me coming today.
 
For the C7 generation the chassis is the same ridged configuration for both convertible and Z06 (even for a ZR1) with identical torsional frequencies.

I seen a Black Base Stingray C7 Roadster a few days ago.
The Top was down.
What a Beautiful Car.
The Coupes just don't look right.
Needs the Top Cut off.
Roadster Just Screams Lighting Speed like A 1970-1/2 TRANS AM RAM AIR IV 4-SPEED.
 
No issues yesterday driving the 1963 Grand Prix Olds 425 to Joliet - Chicago .
I averaged 16.25 mpg Roundtrip.
I was hauling Tail a few times.
5.0 Stang guys liked.
I was at a Stoplight and and got A Bug Thumbs up by A Late Model 5.0 Stang Driver.....Yelling Fick Yeah out the Window to me !
Was Shaking his car with open 425 ci Exhaust.
On the way out Ricers were around leaving Joliet.
Revving up thier Shitboxes behind at a Stop Light.
Light Turned Green.
I dropped the Hammer.
I left His Stupid Azz in Tire Rubber...
0-100 mph in No Time.
Looked in the Rear View Mirror and at Least 500 feet behind me.
 
I noted almost 20 inches of Engine Vacuum on the Grand Prix's Factory Vacuum Guage mounted upright on the Console yesterday Grumpy.
I was cruising 70-80 mph.
The More I drive the Grand Prix the Better the Olds 425 Runs.
The Piston Rings Reseated Fully after a long time with the Engine in storage.
Also I don't recall any Olds 455 engine running as nice and Powerfull as my 1965 Olds 425A.
It really is the best Olds Engine ever made as Old timers told me in the past.
I haven't touched the Holley Street Avenger 770 cfm Carb since I rebuilt it.
I know more Torque & Hp can be had fine tuning.
The Vertex Magneto I credit for excellent performance too.
No MSD Can match the Vertex Magnetos ultra long spark duration.
30-40 crank degrees long spark duration .
Very High Joules Spark energy at the spark plug electrodes delivered.
The Engine fires right off instant Hot or Cold.
Like late model EFI But Better.
Old School Tech.
Only You and Me know how good it is Grumpy.

Its Street Torque Really the Olds 425 has.
The Rod to Stroke ratio is near identical to a Pontiac 400 ci V8.
It idles so clean.
Torque is not excessive .
The Grand Prix hooks up fast on narrow P225/70R15 tires.
The Rims are from my old 1978 Buick Electra. 5 X 5" bolt pattern.
Same as Fullsize Pontiac used 1957-64.
Totally low Buck build fun.
Single most expensive purchase was The Vintage Oldsmobile Vertex Magneto.
Saw it on Ebay and made it mine.

The low cost, great performing vehicles are the best. Drive them like you stole them and
you don't worry about losing a small fortune if something goes wrong. I'm Jealous.
That's why the 84TA is only getting epoxy primer. I won't have to worry about scratching
a $7000+ paint job.
 
I found and bought a Factory 2.87 9.3 Pontiac Ring & Pinion Gearset Grumpy.
Good Price & in Excellent used condition. 1961 Vintage. 55 yeard old.
2.87 :1 Was used in The Bonneville with 389 & 421 V8 with the 4-speed Super Hydromatic.

I am building drop out 3 rd members 9.3 Pontiacs this summer.
1 with 2.87 gearing for Ultra High speed highway driving 100-140 mph +.
1 with 3.64 gearing for all around Street Performance use.
1 with 4.30 :1 gearing for Street Race use & dragstrip.
Going to explore Real world Gearing changes like never done on your site and Digital Corvette.

The 425 Olds has almost the Same Engine Torque output as the Legendary 1963 Pontiac SD421 Engine that had 480 Ft/lbs Torque.
My Olds 425 has 470 Ft/lbs rated.
 
The 1963 Grand Prix has 3.23 gears present and a Factory Posi Differential.
Dana Power Track 4-pinion spider gear unit.

After you are done with your real world testing, why not have the best of both worlds
and install a 4L80E overdrive transmission with the 4.30 rear gears?
 
Brian, have you pulled your spark plugs yet in the Olds yet to read them?
If you have the time, or when you do, please post some pics of them.
 
If I find a deal on a 4L80E.
A seperate trans computer contoller box is required .
Or the light switch method to make upshifts & downshifts.
$ Is tight too.
Want my Trans Am back together in 2016.
 
Its a Little Fat WOT.
Spark plugs are a Full Dark Tan.
Switched to AC Delco R43 A few weeks back after replacing valvestem seals.
And making the Valvetrain Full adjustable.
Installing Viton Valve Stem Seals soon.
Found a set to Fit my Olds 425 no machine work.
Ford GT40 Viton Seals.

I replaced all the Coolant Hoses today.
They were 11 years old, I installed back in 2005.
I used Gates Heater Hoses from my local NAPA store.
The Radiator Hoses are from NAPA also, Form Flex Cool Hoses .
They are not Sexy but much better than any OEM replacement & work great for Non stock engine swaps.
Made for Industrial stationary Gas & Diesel Engines & Diesel Trucks.
They have molded in coil springs so the hoses wont ever collapse shut.
Very thick walled & puncture resistant.
Ultra Heavy Duty.

If you ever went dirt track racing standard smooth radiator hoses fail the 1st night...overheated race engine or blown locked up.

Ready for 100 F + summer time heat & driving with my 1963 G.P.

I eliminated the separate Power Steering belt.
Have a Powermaster #112 Chrome plated steel dual V-belt alternator pulley coming.
Will have Two V-belts equal length driving the Water Pump, Power Steering Pump, & Alternator.

The Trick Grumpy posted about using a Stainless steel scrub pad to control oil in crankcase breathers really does work.
Tested it to 100 mph tonight WOT.
Not a drop of oil anywhere.
The Factory Rope Asbestos Rear Main seal on the Olds 425 is drip free.
Amazing how good it still works 51 years later.

air flow exiting the engines crank case ,saturated with micro oil droplets, and pressurized by ring blow-bye that would frequently exit the breather , to leave a constant oily film on the breather exterior without the stainless scrubber acting as a oil separation maze , gets scrubbed of its load of micro droplets of oil as it passes through that metallic maze , the hot crank case air exits the engine breather tube while oil condenses , on the stainless steel maze surface,and unless the ring seal really sucks, and is excessive ,the heavier oil drops back into the engine, while the lighter hot air minus its load of micro droplets exits, a crank case windage screen around the lower 180 degrees of the rotating assembly will significantly reduce the amount of oil whipped into a frothy mist , but the breather scrubber further limits oil loss
