I am looking at a 1970 427 out of an old flatbed cab over. I will be putting it in my 1954 Chevy Truck. I was wanting to know if it’s worth getting. Looking to get at least 500 horsepower out of it but not sure if that’s a good block or what all I would need to do to get that kind of HP.

step one is getting the casting numbers of the block and heads, and yes,
no mater if its a standard or a tall deck block,
grab it if the price is semi reasonable!
I PREFER the TALL DECK blocks,
but you would gain some power with longer rods,
lighter weight pistons and higher compression,
as that allows the engine to reve with a lot less stress,
and of course better heads,
and a more aggressive performance cam.
please post the casting numbers on the block and heads
yes we can certainly find a way to exceed 500 horse power:D

Had him grab those numbers. 3969858
He’s asking $1500 for the whole truck or said to make him an offer on just the motor.

3969858....427T......68-84...4-bolt

what head casting numbers

Not sure. He’s not available right now. Do you know what the stock hp was for that year? & Would changing heads be the best way to increase HP?

you can,t make intelligent productive changes
, too your current engine without knowing what your currently dealing with,
in the parts you have now.

I have one of those 427 Tall Decks.
They are around 230 Horsepower only.
Around 380 Ft/lbs torque.
Not much.

You pretty much throw everything away but the Tall Deck 427 block itself.
All else will be new aftermarket.
It's not a low cost engine build.
Usually make a 496 ci stroker.
They deliver power.
Need $15k at least typical.

Real low ball side be $5500 k.
Going to use dated and some inferior parts.

$400 on the engine alone.
Block is worth that.
It will have the Tall Deck 427 Truck Oval ports heads.
Flow real close to 781 oval ports from 454 lineup.
Oval ports used on Tall Decks till 1983 year. I have a 1983 TD 427.
Can only identify year of engine by cylinder head casting numbers.

Chevy Tall Deck 427 block has no date codes.
Done just like Oldsmobile did with thier V8s.

you might want to post the cylinder head casting numbers , they may or may not be suitable for porting and performance applications
you can certainly swap to longer connecting rods and lighter weight pistons on the original crank, or go with a fairly cheap 4" stroke crank,
new pistons and your current connecting rods to build a 454 or stroke it to 489-with a .060 over bore size, 496 displacement with a 4.25" crank.
