1994 K1500 Suburban 4X4, Another SBC Bites The Dust

It quit raining Grumpy.
Walked around outside & ground is wet but not saturated Mud.

Thought of how to get the Built 350 TBI Engine from my Lean To Shed to the Suburban 30-feet away.
Not possible across dirt & grass alone.
Mopar Bob & Me could pick the Engine up by hand & carry over.
Both of us are strong enough to do.it.
He will be at work tomarrow so that is out.
I have to Move the Suburban alone.
Its on an incline uphill slight.
Roll it back but not too far.
30 Feet.
Fire up the '63 Grand Prix.
Hookup a Long Heavy duty chain & Towing straps I have.
Grand Prix has Posi Rear.
Olds 425 lots of TORQUE & HP.
May tear up my Lawn some if I gas it too hard.
6,000 lbs minus engine to move.

I moved the Suburban with my Grand Prix.
It was very humid & hot this morning.
Brakes were stuck on the Suburban from sitting. Broke it free tugging.
Also broke my 4" inch wide tow strap.
Had tie back together with a Sailors Knot.

Its cooling off now.
A breeze is blowing steady.
Rest for a few hours and then go to work dropping in the built 350 TBI engine. Get it bolted down today is the goal.

I ran the Grand Prix out of gas.
Only had 87 octane in a 2-1/2 gallon gas can..
Put all in the gas tank.
The Olds 425 ran just fine on 87 octane.
I was told that it runs good on 87 fuel from the guy I bought it from back in 2011.
Does not match fuel octane charts with 180-185 psi cranking compression.

I am up early this morning .
I feel better.
That Illinois Humidy & Heat will kick your ass.
Getting older I guess.
I used to be able to work in 95-100 F heat non stop Sunrise to Sunset.
Think nothing of it.

Send Krazy Ed a text & see if he wants to work today.
We usually start 11am-12pm.

I am going to get the hood off the Suburban to make dropping in the engine easier.
I will have to Hook up my Grand Prix again To move the Suburban forward as I drop the engine in.
Its a Huge & Heavy Tank the Suburban .

Don't you have a tractor? You could do well with picking up an old forklift. They are very hard to sell when they get well used. Gas driven is undesirable. Around here $1,000 to $2,500 can get you one that runs and works, if not working they are sold for scrap but you can repair bad hoses and pumps.

I used a Forklift at my last job to pull the huge the Big Cummins M11, ISX Cummins, & Detroit Diesel engined from Semi Trucks.
And put the engines back in with a Forklift.
A 1967 Clark forklift with a 4 cyl.. Hercules engine.

No Tractor to use.
No $ to buy one yet.
On my List. There is an Allis Chamlers I want 20-miles away .
1939 vintage.
Or a 1957 WD45.

Making do with what I have.

I have Huge Treed around too.
100 + Years old.
But no way to roll the engine under them & my Suburban .
Otherwise use my Chain hoist.

The Suburban is my Heavy Duty 4x4 Tow rig.
It moves Semi Trucks with ease.

"HF has a nice 2500 lb electric winch for $49 after coupon. How about using a "come-along?"

AS I POSTED IN THE THREAD ABOUT SWAPPING MY B.I.L. BOAT ENGINE

http://www.harborfreight.com/2500-l...winch-with-wireless-remote-control-61297.html
61840.jpg

just a heads up on this project, my B.I.L. purchased this winch rated at 2500 LBS from HF
if you look at the boat engine pictured above it with all accessories bolted onto it,
It weights less than 800 lbs, or 1/3rd of its rated lift rate
(most automotive winchs Ive used over the years ,have the ability to pull just a bit higher than they are rated at,if they have a connection to fully charged batteries.
(maybe 5%-to 10% in most cases)
now I really don,t care that this is a piece of crap, because I don,t own it

but I will point out as a service to the members reading this thread,
that an 800 lb engine suspended from the A-FRAME we built to pull the boat engine
and this winch REQUIRED us to use BOTH the winch connected to two new 12 volt car batteries , with jumper cables ,

plus my battery charger set on its 200 amp car start position,
PLUS both of us physically lifting the engine, too manually to reduce,
the load was required to get it to lift up
on the winch to allow the 2500 lb rated winch
(with all that help !
to lift the 700 lb-800 lb engine!)

I was thinking to use the pulley to roll the the truck up to the engine. I bought this same winch 2 years ago to mount on my 66" zero turn Hustler to pull some logs and pull out some small box woods. I don't doubt what you had to do, just never heard of needing multiple 12v batteries for a 12v motor? Why wouldn't it be discontinued? Great, another dam thing to get rid of!

http://www.harborfreight.com/
has a 20% off coupon this weekend

http://www.harborfreight.com/5-ton-chain-hoist-2239.html
btw they also sell a 3 ton rated version but after looking at the chain size on both and looking at the price difference I went with the 5 ton version, a friend I know has the 3 ton version, and its marginally faster and its lighter weight but I still think I made the correct call, selecting the 5 ton rated version

when my B.I.L. first suggested the boat engine project and suggested the electric winch I suggested we use the differential pulley,
I already owned to save time and money, and demonstrated how it worked,
he said it takes about 1 minute per foot of lift, thats too slow, Ill go out and buy an electric winch....which he did,
(that took a day and separate trip,)
and it took over an hour to install..
once we had it, then time to pull and wire two car batteries,
and even with two fully charged batteries, it was not able to lift the engine...
.but obviously taking a few minutes to lift the engine with a manual chain jack we already had on hand....
would waste time...
do you ever feel like beating someone over the head with a lug wrench in the nearly hopeless quest to knock some sense into the thought process??
