1994 K1500 Suburban 4X4, Another SBC Bites The Dust

I'm used to pulling #1 plug and guessing the pressure against my finger over the plug hole is the best it's going to be then play with the distributor til I get the rotor pointing at #1 wire with the distributor vacuum pointing in the factory position.

I put a loose ball of paper on the plug hole (make sure it's too big and firm to get sucked in). That get's blown out approaching TDC.

Richard I'll try and explain my 100% fool proof method:

#1 and 6 are running mates, they are both at TDC at the same time, but on opposite strokes.

To have 1 at TDC firing, 6 has to be on overlap.

Overlap is the point where both valves are open a small amount.

I watch the exhaust valve close and as it is just about closed the intake begins to open.

When both valves are open slightly, equally, like magic, the timing mark will be at zero, as the 1 and 6 pistons are both at TDC..

With a bit of practice it becomes easy to find overlap.

With 6 on overlap, the rotor needs to point at 1

Once this is achieved, to allow for ign. advance, and slack in the timing chain etc, reverse the crank about 20 deg .

I then put a spark plug in the #1 wire and tickle the distributor back and forth slightly, with the ignition on.

When I find the point where the plug sparks, the timing is just about perfect.

Verify the other plug wires are in the correct spot in relation to #1

Turn the key and the Engine will fire right up ready for the timing light or ear depending on your preference.

With a carb, I fill the bowl through the vent so starting is instant.

With fuel injection I cycle the key a few times to build fuel pressure.

I like Engines to start instantly after working on them.

Thanks
Randy

PS: This is also how I adjust valves, the running mate/overlap method.

6 on overlap, adjust 1, et, etc.

Thanks, can't wait to try it!

Right on Richard!!

Very satisfying to reach through the car window, turn the key and have the Engine fire right up.

Thanks
Randy
