2004R out of a Grand National - should I try to get it?

"One test is worth a thousand expert opinions."
My friend Geoff is giving up on his ChevyII Nova project and is going to send it down the road.
The car has a Buick GN 2004R in it. I don't know the details yet. Should I try to get it for my 84 Trans Am
that came with a 700R4 in it? When I get my car going again - no computer controls.
I still have the original 84 27 spline transmission and converter, but currently installed in my car is a later 30 spline 700R4 from a Corvette, and it has been upgraded. It has 19K miles on it. The lock-up converter paired with this transmission is supposedly a GN converter that stalls at 2400 ish rpm???
I also bought a new 3200 stall lock-up converter for the Vette trans - still in the box.
Both transmissions have been sitting for 20 years.
What to do, what to do?

how much $ can I buy the 30 spline 700r4 trans and matched converter for? if its for sale?

Depends what you want Mike.
A Buick GN 200R4 I think is most valuable to a guy Restoring a Buick GN or GNX.
Likely cost alot to go through it.
$1000 low side.
3500 high side.

Have a Corvette 700R4 that has been gone through and works.
Have another big stall converter for it.

I can tell you that all aftermarket Planet gearsets for 700R4 & 4L60E are made in China and powder press metal.
The GM Factory Planets are superior.
Billet Steel.
For guys on a tight budget and want Overdrive with moderate power 400-450 Hp and $1000-1600 total cost built it can not be matched.

Your 3rd Gen Trans Am has the Torque arm also Mike.
Oooooh, that's right. I forgot about that.
People that are making decent power in 3rd gen f-bodies usually take the torque arm off of the tailshaft, remounting it to the tunnel.

I will find out more. But should I decide to sell, you're the first on the list Grumpy.
I talked to the guy at the transmission shop that rebuilt it 20 yrs and 19K mi ago, and asked about going through it just because it has been sitting for so long. There was nothing wrong with it when I parked the car. He wanted as much to look through it as a complete rebuild.:eek::eek:

If the cost is low enough jump on it and buy it Mike.

don,t rush its not important or a priority, Id only be interested,
if it was a bargain as I frequently find I need parts and one of my vettes still has the ability to swap back too a 700r4
