220 Swift Reloading

Grumpy I just picked up an old Ruger M77 unfired in 220 Swift. Do you have any load advice as far as bullet weights and powders its going to be a coyote farm gun. I thing 55 grain is what I should load for it and I have a lot of the powders from a few books but none in the top couple from each loading book. I also hear that the speed of this round likes to strip the plating from the bullets

if you have not yet done so..
invest in 4-6 good reloading manuals,
and yeah ever few 5-7 years youll need a new updated manual,
as new cartridges and powders are introduced and old powders discontinued

I only owned one 220 swift rifle, and only for a few months before a buddy offered me a swap for a 338, win Winchester mod 70 (I never even got to fire that rifle....
I had got that 220 swift rifle a browning single shot, 220 swift in a trade,
that looked similar to this
RS-full-length-2-2000x683.jpg

and its one of several rifles which I really regret ever swapping.:(

be sure you check data,
but if I remember correctly it liked 39 grains of ww760 and a fed primer,
under
a 55 grain speer bullet
with that load 1" 5 shot hundred yard groups were easy off a solid bench and sand bags

btw I swapped that 338 winchester rifle,
the next day with a different guy for a almost new remington 700 458 mag,

458win2.jpg

as he found he could not tolerate the recoil
it came with a box of 20 cartridges with only 9 fired cases:D
what he failed to understand was you did not need to load 458 mag cartridges,
to the full potential of a 500 grain bullet at 2100 fps
as were factory ammo loaded.
that 458 remington rifles been on several deer and elk hunts ,
but its used with marginally reduced hand loads
it works , and has worked well for decades ,
its great for elk with a 405 grain at 1800 fps:D
this basically duplicates a 450 marlin power level thats proven to be devastating on elk and deer

I have a brand new Speer & Sierra my Hornaday and Lee are a couple years old and I always check Amazon for used ones like I have older Speer Nosler and Pet Loads and a boatload of powder mfg. books and magazines but I will always go to the expert (you) first for any tricks you may have or any lessons learned that you just can't read in a book so I hope you don't mind me picking your brain just like the younger guys at the range and the crew at work do to me and I always feel good when someone has enough confidence in me to ask me in the first place by the way I was thinking of around a 3 x 16 scope for this either in Vortex , Leupold, or Nikon I did find a Nikon prostaff 7 in 4 x 16 x44 that I'm thinking about buying if I get that I can save 259.00

feel free to discuss everything you want to, I enjoy hunting and reloading and generally almost all firearms.
btw be careful to regularly clean the rifle bore and it may help to spray the bore after each cleaning with moly spray and a soaking wet moly soaked patch, after and before use,
as the high velocity in a 220 swift and similar cartridges like my 257 wby, tend to cause bore wear at a faster than normal rate, the frequent application of moly reduces wear
(this works to reduce bore wear , on all caliber rifles but its effect is more easily seen on the high velocity cartridges)

Bores carefully been pre-treated with a good moly soak down,
(which I repeat on returning home with, each firearm, and after each cleaning after a hunting trip or trip to the local rifle range.)

btw congrats on the new rifle acquisition

Moly exists as microscopic hexagonal crystal platelets Several molecules make up one of these platelets. A single molecule of Moly contains two sulfur atoms and one molybdenum atom. Moly platelets are attracted to metal surfaces. This attraction and the force of moving surfaces in contact, rubbing across one another provide the necessary thermochemical reaction necessary for Moly to form an overlapping protective coating like armor on the rifle bore surface, This protective armor coating has a number of properties that are very beneficial for your rifles bore surface

The Moly platelets that make up the protective layers on your bore wall surfaces slide across one another very easily. Instead of metal rubbing against metal, you have Moly platelets moving across one another protecting and lubricating the bore to projectile surface contact

This coating effectively fills in the microscopic pores that cover the surface of all micro bore imperfections making them smoother. By filling in the craters and pores Moly improves this seal

This overlapping coating of Moly also gives protection against loading (perpendicular) forces. The high pressures that occur between these moving surfaces that tend to squeeze normal lubricants out.
