383 0r 377 sbc?

the 383 uses the far more common 350 block, as its basis with coolant between the cylinder walls, the 377 uses the far less common 400 block, they make approximately equal hp but the 383 makes it at about 400 rpm lower in the rpm band, the 377 has less valve shrouding, and a better bore to stroke ratio, and I used to build lots of them BUT THAT WAS BEFORE WE FOUND that building a 406sbc using the 383s 3.75" stroke with a 4.155 bore in a 400 block you get even more hp and torque so if you've got a 400 block thats the route we usually suggest, but with 6" rods and an internally balanced crank assembly, Id point out that any really serious build will be far better off if you use an aftermarket DART or similar block as the castings thicker and made with a high Nickle cast iron making it significantly stronger.
keep in mind that in the late 1960s-early 1970s cylinder head flow rates were not nearly what they are now, even ported,
aftermarket sbc heads that flowed over 260 cfm were rare back then
