400ci small block fuellie heads which cams should be used

Oh we do have a bit of experience.
Just reading up on how the edelbrock works.
Tomorrow first thing us set to g the valves back to ,1/4 turn instead of 1/2 turn

For 200 miles everything is OK, and then you start having problems..... is the camshaft going flat?

When you adjust the valves, do any of the rockers look like they are not lifting as high as others?
How does the oil look, any metallic sparkles?

If one looks low, pull the rocker off and put dial indicator on the lifter and measure lobe lift.

The trouble started after the valve clearance setting....
But we only did tick and 1/2 turn....

Well if you are going to visit the valve lash settings again it will be easy enough to check out
the camshaft then.

Maybe water in the distributor cap?

It's really strange we have now very fast idle... engine runs for 30 secs and then dies

Water in the cap: we haven't had any rain in 6 weeks it's over 95 F here now.

Idle speed too high.
Wrong spark plug heat range.
Fuel too low of octane rating.
Very High outside ambient temps along with High Water temps.
Idle speed is high ( otherwise the bloody thing stalls and driving of is not possible,!)
High outside temp yes!
Low octane : 98 Ron together with high temps
Will we tomortow

I have used Edelbrock and Crater AFB carbs in the past.
The 1 piece baseplate and float bowl made of aluminum does a great job of boiling gasoline in the float bowl.
Opposite of whats wanted when its real hot outside.
Try and get coolant temps at 160-190 F.

Yep it was incredibly hot today

A couple more things to consider .....

http://www.painlessperformance.com/faq.php?s=General
  1. Faulty alternator/regulator. GM 10SI and 12SI alternators sometimes feedback voltage into the exciter wire even when the engine is shut off. This causes voltage to feed into the ignition circuit which keeps the coil hot with voltage and causes the engine to keep running. Remedy this issue by installing a diode #276-1661 from Radio Shack, inline with the alternator exciter wire. Make sure to install the diode with the line closest to the alternator. By installing this diode you have introduced a one way gate in which voltage can only flow to the alternator and not vice-a-versa on the exciter wire.
  2. Electric fan wired into the ignition circuit without a relay. Electric fans must be wired with a relay if they are spliced into any of the ignition hot circuits of any chassis harness. If a relay is not used the fan will feedback voltage into the ignition circuit of the harness when the ignition key is turned off while the engine is running with the fan spinning.

It was real hot here the 1st and 2nd week of July.
Making a Hotrod or Race Car Perform in 95-120 F weather is a challange.
Also below Freezing temps.
Have to Figure out problems and overcome them like Detroit Engineers did with Musclecars when New.
Pontiac was one of the best at it.

Right we need your opinion on the following:

Before: engine smooth ; burnouts; 200 miles ( and a messed up trans) ;
After setting valves :
No more capacity to middle low; driving of : engine stalls ; idling for a while then the engine dies; revving engine at idle turning of ignition = detonation/ the thing runs on itself....
Valves too tight?
Set at this way ( not your way I know but I wasn't involved) ticking 1/4 ,turn ; engine off then another 1/4 turn...
Any suggestions ..

Look for a vacuum leak, Arjen. There is a hose or vacuum cap off someplace.

Right first update
One: male sure the rocker covers are on the right way around....
Do not fit them without the gaskets....
We haven't got gaskets...
But we have a waterjet....
So we made some ourselves
