those are some wild specs... 430 duration? 6" exhaust? god damn thats alot of hardware for under 700 hp

They listed cam lobe actual lift.
.430".
Need to multiply by the rocker arm ratio.

6.00" inch exhaust is the engine dyno test cell exhaust to the Roof of the building outside.

Total cost to build the engine not listed.

Its time to get away from 23 degree SBC Heads I say.
Look to true race 18-15-12 degree heads.
The limit with SBC Is headers.
Real affordable big tubes just not there.
$400-500 buying price.
Custom headers needed.
No sense with 23 degree heads.

In the LS X era now.
Hellcat era.

Only GM Old school Big Blocks can do it with many production parts under $5000.00. Race and beat Hellcats.

yep youre totally right i misread that 430... 26x duration doesnt sound so unreasonable.

and if i were trying to beat out 700hp with a bbc on THE MUSCLE i wouldnt reuse many stock parts... block i guess... but in my part of the world its almost easier to buy an aftermarket block and just start there rather than pull an entire motor from a junkyard just to get a block.

They Should have a Nationwide Contest Like this Phil....
Beat A Hellcat Street Racing using Factory production block, factory crankshaft, Factory Connecting Rods, Factory Heads, Factory Intake, & Factory Carburator used only.
No Lightweights allowed.
Car scaled weight with driver 3500 Lbs.

Your choices GM Become real Limited.
If Mickey Thompson was alive he would not choose SBC Now would He ? !
You lost before the race even started.

Comes down to Pontiac 455.
Big Block Chevy.
Olds 425-455.

if i had to use all factory parts like you say i would actually choose a ford modular as a starting point. 4.6, 5.4, or 5.8... easily the toughest stuff around.

you forgot the BUICK 455, and CADDY 500 engines which both have a great deal of potential
I have seen A Caddie 500 engine near me for sale recent Grumpy.
$650. Was interesting looking at photos online.
I had a friend that loved Buick 455's.
Never had a Stage 1.
Was impressive in the 1969-71 Skylarks he had.
Unfortunately he blew every one up.
Screamed them to 8,000 valvefloat.
Was a heavy drinker.
Stupid kids back then. Hard to find now too a Buick 455.

I know you see it everyday too Grumpy.
The guys are low on $ cash or broke.
Digital Corvette Forum also.
There is no way anyone can save $1,000-2,000 per month for engine builds and rest of car to build.

Spent Friday on the dyno testing 421 pump gas build for a customer, He was looking for a 600 horse pump gas build and we achieved our goals with this build. Torque was very impressive @ 574 FT LBS. Tried to build this with all shelf stock parts so it so it could be duplicated. The good thing this is just a street car and only needed to turn this engine 6400 to make peak power.

Little about the build

Dart SHP block 4.155 bore
Callies 3.875 D/S crank
Callies 6 inch rods
Mahle pistons
Clevite V bearings
Steffs custom aluminum pan
Bullet S/R roller cam 1.000 base circle cam
.904 Morel lifters
AFR heads 220/75cc chambers ( Thanks Tony Mamo )
061040 World intake
Pro Systems carb
MSD Distributor
ATI balancer
Crower SS rockers 1.5
