HAVING A CARBINE CHAMBERED FOR THE SAME CARTRIDGE,
THAT YOUR PISTOL IS CHAMBERED TO ACCEPT,
AND IN SOME CASES USE THE SAME MAGAZINES IS,
IN SOME CASES A GOOD IDEA LOGISTICALLY AS,
YOU ONLY NEED TO STOCK ONE TYPE OF AMMO.
and interchangeable magazines
EVERY CHOICE YOU MAKE IS A TRADE-OFF IN SOME AREAS
(THINK THROUGH YOUR CHOICES)
I can't really see a need for any pistol cartridge in a carbine,
when you have at least potentially several dozen much more powerful and longer range options.
but a pistol cartridge , choice does make a great deal of sense in a suppressed carbine config
now of course that choice of a pistol cartridge does tend to limit both your options and in most cases long range effective use ,
but in a personal defensive weapon use at ranges exceeding 150 yards or so is very rarely needed.
And if you think about it, you're unlikely to burn out a 10mm carbine barrels rifling in a lifetime of shooting.
where as a 223 /556 might only last 4000-5000 shots before accuracy is less than ideal, at longer ranges, in a carbine.
(keep in mind barrels are fairly cheap, usually in the $120-240 dollar range and any gunsmith can change one in under an hour on an AR15 platform)
now personally I don,t think the advantage of having a single ammo caliber,
used to feed both a pistol and carbine is a valid concern or any major advantage
,in the bigger picture, as the loss of power and range, especially in a carbine.
if limited to using the pistol ammo only,
is too great a sacrifice in the carbine's versatility in my opinion.
but there are some exceptions, and a 10mm carbine will lead a long happy life using cast bullets, something a 223 will not do.
but the lower power pistol ammo does have the "ADVANTAGE" of being a bit safer to use in a home defensive environment
, as it will tend to penetrate fewer internal walls ,beyond the intended target,
and its a bit less likely to take out unintended personnel, or family members,
if you miss the intended target, home invaders, or carjackers etc.
in that intended usage, and recoil and muzzle flash is far more limited.
Id say its use has a noticeable advantage, in limited areas, and a 10mm carbine would be ideal,
and it also has the punch to use for hunting deer and hogs, and it will work with a suppressor,
much better than a caliber like 223 rem, as a 200 grain bullet in a 10mm cartridge can be loaded sub-sonic,
yet still retain an effective punch against the intended targeted home invaders, or carjackers etc.
and at limited ranges, and ESPECIALLY IF USED with a suppressor,
not be all that damaging on your hearing or have the excessive muzzle flash in a dark room that some calibers might have.
personally I think a 10mm AR15 clone, carbine that used Glock 10mm mags is one good option

I see lots of guys buying STRIPPED lower AR receivers, but
I've always been into hunting rifles more than military designs, so please bare with my partial lack of info, yes I think everyone should own a semi auto clone of a military rifle, personally I think the FAL, or M1A in 308 win, are ideal options, and yes the AR15 is very popular, but it lacks...
