Help needed. My '55 Chevy pickup with 235 six ran great prior to installing two new Rochesters on a new Fenton dual carb manifold with a new split exhaust manifold. Otherwise no changes were made. Got it to idle OK, but backfires like crazy. I continue to adjust the mixture screws with no significant improvement. Exhaust manifold temperature (at the head) for the front 3 cylinders is about 300+ degrees but the exhaust from the rear 3 is only half that!! I have the vacuum line from only the front carb to the distributor and blocked off the vacuum port on the rear carb. Is this a problem? Also: Exhaust coming out the tailpipe: Front 3 cylinders is hot but the rear 3 are only warm while the pressure of the exhaust coming out of the tailpipe is much stronger from the rear 3 cylinders than the front 3. I run a Pertronix electronic ignition and flame thrower coil. I could install new plugs and wires and/or adjust the timing but why? It ran great before the carb changes. The carbs are new exact Rochesters for that engine.

it sure sounds like the rear carb is not flowing fuel correctly, ID check the float levels and verify the carbs feed line is ok, in fact if the carbs are basically identical, ID swap the two to see if the issue follows the carb or stays the way it is, to verify its that rear carb or the fuel line supply issue.
Id sure look for vacuum leaks and verify the ignition firing order, and fuel pressure at each carb inlet!
damn, I wish you were local, so I could drop over and get you sorted out!
that sounds like something rather easy to diagnose and correctly tune,, GOOD LUCK!
there are several aftermarket intake designs some have a single common plenum, some have two separated plenums

yeah, its different in that both carbs need to be synchronized, so both open at identical rates, this is commonly done with a u-tube manometer and vacuum gauge
each carb feeds 3 cylinders on a 6 cylinder engine , and yeah they do frequently have a connecting balance connector tube but thats disconnected/plugged temp for set up.

yeah, old school, multi carb, tune experience helps
