A little help with a 200R4 in my vette

I've had a small leak since install, it appears to be either the shift lever seal or the electrical connector right next to it.

I've talked to the builder and rather then send it back to him to have it replaced I'll replace it myself.

He recommended purchasing the correct tool and hinted that Advance Auto may carry the tool.

Has anyone here replaced the shifter seal and if so did you purchase the tool?

The real issue is the electrical connector, I really can't find anywhere that explains how the plug is held in and what type of seal it takes.

Use a small pick tool to remove shift lever seal.
A 13mm deep well chrome 3/8 drive socket. works good tp unstall new seal with a small ball peen hammer.
There is a plastic latch holding the electrical connector into trans case. Depress from inside of trans case. Transtar carries the new O ring required.

The pin has serrated edges, so you CANNOT twist it out, you will have to pull it straight out.




Maybe you can remove the seal without removing the shaft, but just in case you will know how.

Thanks for the help,

I found the shift shaft seal local now I'm looking for the electrical connector O-ring.

Once I get the parts I'll change them out and hope the leak stops.

I worked on the leaks today and was able to replace the shifter shaft seal and the O-ring on the electrical connector.

The shifter shaft had paint and a little corrosion on it which I think was the issue. I was able to clean the shaft without removing it and installed the new seal.

I pulled the electrical connector and found a very hard and cracked O-ring. I was unable to find an exact replacement but was able to find an O-ring close to the same size to use. I’ll give it a shot and if it leaks I’ll visit a local shop to see if I may be able to get one from them.

Glad the pics helped, you should be able to order that o-ring from a transmission supply house. Maybe get both the connector and o-ring if the car is something your going to keep for awhile. That connector get brittle and the tabs break off....mine did while removing it.

If you need it, I have an old one that looks to be in good shape, it's still pliable. I kit I have has two o-rings the right size, if after I'm done and you need one and I haven't used the 2nd new one, then that 's another possibility.

One of the tabs did break while removing it from the case. The trans was built as non lock up so there is no internal wires or connector. Looking at it though it really needs the internal connector to keep the tabs locked in place. I may go the local junk yard or a trans shop and see if I can get the internal connector and plug in just to make sure the external connector stays put.

I haven't driven the car much so time will tell but its not leaking so far.

Really appreciate the info, for that price I'll order new.

The only bad deal is having to drain fluid to install it but I'd rather do that and have the piece of mind that it can't back out.

I'll look if they have the internal connector also, the internal connector will not allow the tabs to fold in so the external connector can't back out.

Neal,

The connectors that I'm showing are the internal side the electrical connector assembly. Sorry if I mislead you on that detail.

The connector that the link to Amazon pulls up is the connector that installs into the trans housing, I'm calling this one the external connector. The connector that I think holds the tabs in place is the one that is internal to the trans, the one that the wires extend out of and go to the internal solenoids.

Now that I think about it my description was not very clear at all.

This should clear it up, I have all three connectors in their relative positions
and labeled......A, B, & C. I see what you are saying about Connector A
holding the tabs out on Connector B, but I think you will find it only holds
tab #1 out. The other two tabs don't touch connector A.



The photo below is rolled 180° so you can see the detail on the
backside of the photo above.



I went by Oklahoma Transmission Supply this last week and bought
some things, including two O-Rings. If you need one, I have a extra
new one.

Yes I was thinking that connector A would help hold the tabs in place so connector B could not work its way out of the case. One of the tabs on connector B did break on mine when removing it, it didn't break off but it did break.
