I constantly get people posting about the mistakes they made or less than ideal choices in component selection they made.
in most cases if you ask them several questions you'll rapidly find they either just started out modifying the car they owned without giving the project much thought as to what they really wanted to have when they were done, or similarly, they just started buying parts and learned in a hit or miss way what worked or more likely failed to meet their expectations.
very few people start out with a well thought out plan and a goal, of lets say owning an AC cobra clone or a T-bucket with a 426 hemi and a 4 speed transmission ETC.
far more people buy something like a mustang or camaro, and decide they want to "add a bit more in performance" and even fewer people think through the requirements for bigger brakes, better cooling, a improved oil system, larger tires etc.
Iet in the vast majority of cases if you though through your goals, it would NOT include wasting a few thousand dollars and a couple years being wasted on adding performance parts to your current car, rather than carefully planning and acquiring and building your dream car!

step one is harder than you might think,
its planing what you want and logically listing what needs to be purchased, modified or acquired, to accomplish that goal
the more common and lighter in weight the car is, the more performance potential any horse power level can provide

obviously you'll need a place to work, that's secure,( a garage or at least a car port) theres a great deal of satisfaction in building something both unique and impressively fast, and knowing exactly how every component in it works,,, something thats becoming a rather rare set of skills in a video game world

a few basic tools and a goal you want to accomplish and a semi reasonable budget, and at least the basic desire to learn the new skills that are required.(I can assure you that your working a a huge disadvantage if you don't select the major brands like chevy , ford or mopar as many other brands generally have compariably very few options in available components)

your thoughts gentlemen?
have you ever thought you could have made better choices, or avoided a few mistakes?
planning and doing the useful related research, is not as (FUN) as buying parts, but it pays big dividends eventually

Right here. You know my current struggle, but I have a better example.

2.5 years ago I knew I needed to do a v6 to 350 swap. I was asking for help online complaining about my v6, and wanted a muscle car for the first time in my life (poor background, never had anything faster than a base Ford fusion).

Well, everybody on forums chimed in telling me a v6 would cost too much to make fast, I might as well swap it.
So I did. Wasted a ton of money having a crook build up and swap in a v8 smog engine with stupid parts, with the factory deep dish pistons with iron Vortec heads on it. Went from 200HP factory v6 to probably 280. Dude didn't even tune it or set timing well, and in fact I'm getting ready to do that myself.

ONE person on a forum out of probably fifty told me I should keep the v6, get a 2,600 stall torque converter, switch the rear gears to 3.73 (I did do that), and throw $1,500 at the v6 in minor upgrades.
Instead I spent $5,500 with a hack, who did a crap job; and then spent another 12 months upgrading parts like exhaust, radiator, transmission, rear gears, brakes, and suspension MYSELF to make the car driveable.

I should have listened to that one guy, but I didn't know any better and just knew I needed to get a v8 under that hood. And the masses told me that was the way to go.
 
yes you could have upgraded the V6, to get maybe 300 hp, but the GM v6 has got several built in flaws or limitations
Im sorry you got less than you anticipated with the smog v8 swap, but a 350-or a 383- or a 406 SBC V8 when properly built has a great deal more potential than the v6. ( and generally SBC v8 performance parts are a bit easier to acquire)

Right.
My point is I didn't understand the decision I was making or the parts.
 
yeah, most of us start out in a similar manner, most people call it ,the process of "paying your dues"
life is paved with making mistakes to gain experience ,ideally you learn to read links and sub links, in threads,
so you don't continue to make similar less than ideal decisions, and waste cash.
again, one reason I built the site, as a way to lessen the amount of bad decisions members make,
by providing the answers
to most of the questions before they make those mistakes, IF your willing to read links and ask questions

I don't think you made the wrong decision regarding the V8. Ultimately, it is YOUR car and it is all about what makes YOU happy when you drive it.

Each choice has justifiable arguments. I don't know your history with the car. There are situations where a V6 would be a better choice, but I think you made the right choice, and it is what it is.

If you are going to be partaking in some spirited driving, brake upgrades are always a good decision for safety AND driver confidence. If you are going to spend any money going fast, you should also spend a little to stop hard.

Hot rodding with definitely help highlight systems that need attention and upgrading. If you have a running, driving car, I would consider yourself ahead.

Items like the exhaust, gears, etc., I consider that part of your enjoying the car because you would have changed them anyway.

The dish pistons, on the other hand, is a relatively minor problem and a PITA. I think that has a lot to do with 'people are afraid of compression' and/or 'the pistons came in the kit.'

You can make good power with most of the parts that you already have and consider upgrading the less-than-ideal parts later.

Optimizing compression is one of the things I would like to learn more about. I'm happy to see discussion about that here.

if you want a durable engine that makes impressive power, you need to stop and make a list of compatible components designed to operate
in the intended rpm range matching the cars weight and drive train gearing and tire size.

info in the links can save you a lot of time and cash
keep in mind performance engine parts and in some cases body panel parts,
for the less common brand name PERFORMANCE cars like,
buick,pontiac,OLDS,
PLYMOUTH AMC, Cadillac, that are less commonly raced or collected,
will generally be much harder to find in near the
variety or at as low of a price, as FORD, CHEVY, and DODGE in most cases

The engine swap was the right decision you just let a idiot/thief do the work and sell you the engine. There are a lot of smooth talking idiots out there that can lie through their teeth and be able to get away with it. I think mechanics might be the 2nd worst behind gun sales people as the biggest liars/BSers there are or real close to it
