back in the past vs today..

I have got to wonder a good deal about the changes in this muscle car and engine modification based hobby.
back in the later 1960s-2000 or so it was very common for guys to pool their knowledge,
tool use, skills and effort , or swap the time and skills for others time and skills in exchange for helping others with their projects,
to get what you might need accomplished, I.E. you might be good at brake jobs, electrical or engine mods,
while some other guys are good at upholstery ,differential gear changes, or body work.
the result generally was that as you helped each other on car builds, both parties gained skills experience and access to contacts,
suppliers and personal skills tended to increase as you and they both gained experience.
I don,t see a great deal of that, exchange of skills and work sharing, going on regularly today?
now admittedly the newer cars are not as easy to work on and many of today,s generation seem permanently attached to an I-phone or computer game,
but the potential to help others and get help on your project does still exist.
prices on some project cars are very reasonable in a few cases,
so be aware that you may, deeply regret not purchasing something like a c4 corvette now as a project car,
while they are still fairly inexpensive, remember you at one time could have purchased older muscle cars far cheaper than you can now.
how many guys have taken the time to help someone else on their car or have a friend or two help work on their car?
yeah! your very likely to have too put out more than you get at times and some guy's,
will promise too help and find endless excuses,
to never show up to help you on your car...

its a learning experience, and
you'll eventually find the true friends vs the leaches ,
but in the process you'll gain a few new skills and contacts.

Turbo charging changed everything the last 3-4 years Grumpy.
Simple HP Greed.
I am guilty too.
But reality sets in & actually see how much $$$ per week you can spend or put away.
Then Look at the Hotrod & Race sidejobs coming in....Not much last few years. A few Corvette dana 44's I built.

The idea of trading is Ok. Somewhat Novel today.
Used to be that way here too.
Like 20 years back now.

Just this week I had a guy from work come over so I could help him. Eryk is 21 years old works with
me at Advance Auto. I can tell he wants to learn and is interested it doing things himself on his car
and likes to talk about his plans. So I offered to let come over and use my jack, safety stands, etc.

We dropped the pan on his trans and changed out the filter. He brought almost everything he needed, I
supplied some gasket sealer that he didn't think about. But it usually dries in the tube before I can use it
all anyway.

In most cases , (not all, of course) youll find putting your self out to help other, results in making new contacts,
and a few friends, and incrementally increasing both individuals skills and knowledge.
yes youll be sure to make mistakes occasionally, and yes a few people will try too, use you as a free mechanic ,
with no regard too, helping you, paying for parts or even helping if they can get away with it.
yeah, youll find your working on things your un-familiar with, and may not have the knowledge or tools to work on.
this will result in the near mandatory purchase of new tools and your forced to locate and read reference materials...
never a bad deal, if your into this hobby.

I feel somewhat sorry for this kid. His dad died when he was younger and his step dad is no
good. They have to keep him around just to pay the bills when he feels like it. Eryk is very
appreciative of my help, he keeps thanking me even the next day.

He went with me last week to look at a 63 Nova, I had a 64 in high school. Again he was thanking
me for asking him to go along and enjoyed the short trip to look.

My Old Boss Rez in Joliet has a 1963 Chevy II Nova.
SS trim. Not sure if badges bought and just hung on.
Pretty nice. But not as nice as the one in Oklahoma.
400 SBC all iron. Muncie 4. Someone put a Ford 8 inch from an early Mustang like 1964 in place of the 10-bolt.
He just cruises.
Sounds good.
Real small car like a C4 Corvette.
Perfect Street Racer a 1963 Nova.
