My aluminum headed equipped/aluminum intake/aluminum water pump, BBC engine weighed 545lbs which is less than 20 lbs different than an all iron SBC with factory exhaust manifolds in most factory installed applications

iron to iron theres about a 100 lb increase in weight for a bbc vs a sbc
swap to an aluminum water pump, intake and heads on the bbc vs an iron sbc theres less than 20 lbs difference,
filling your gas tank or letting your girl friend sit in the pass seat has much more effect on the cars handling than an aluminum head, intake and water pump equipped bbc vs an iron sbc
but think about this.
if you build a 383-406 sbc vs a 454-496 bbc, the BBC , the potentially much better flowing heads and larger displacement give the BBC at least a 60-80 hp advantage (probably more) and in repeated tests comparing a well designed 400 sbc vs a similarly well built 402 BBC, the BBC has consistently held a significant power advantage,
yes the SBC can be build a bit cheaper, but Id suggest that few people currently build BBC engines of less than 454 displacement and theres no way a sbc can compete with a properly designed 502-632 bbc

aluminum heads can be easily welded to make repairs if damaged
but one factor on a bbc engine is weight, a iron head weights close to 74 lbs , aluminum heads tend to be 20-30 plus lb lighter in weight each, so saving 40 lbs -60 lbs off the front of the car plus another 5-7 lbs for an aluminum water pump and another 20-25 plus lbs with an aluminum intake makes a great deal of difference in total engine weight, easily 80 plus lbs less with an aluminum water pump, intake and heads used vs the similar factory cast iron components, and no less than 100 lbs save if you also swap to headers vs the factory cast iron exhaust manifolds

Re: basic engine size & weight info

BTW a stock, TPI intake stands almost exactly 8.74" above the blocks forward wall top edge between the cylinders, the stealth ram is at 10.1" tall.
Most performance carb intakes fall in the 8"-10" tall range, while obviously tunnel rams can easily be 16"-18" or more.
Most oil pans extend a LEAST 7" below the oil pan rails and 8"-9" even 10" deep oil pan sumps are comon in stock oil pans
All iron sbc vs. all Alum BBC.
What is the weight diff?

the all aluminum big block would be a bit lighter in weight
aluminum heads and an aluminum block on the big block reduce the total weight over its all iron clone about 140lbs
an all iron big block weights about 110 lbs more at about 685 lbs than an all iron sbc at about 575lbs you can save a quite a few more lbs with a aluminum water pump, and aluminum intake and aluminum heads on that bbc engine/
a all aluminum BBC and a iron block aluminum headed SBC weigh the same. 505 # checked the weighs on a scale
