BBC High volume oil pump with MSD distributor

Hello, I have a boat with 454 bbc .060 over w/ dome pistons 10.2 -1 comp. Using a comp cam extreme marine roller cam w/ 566 total lift and 112 degree lobe centers. It is a new rebuild. Problem, the distributor gear is knife edging. This occurred on motor run in. My builder installed a high volume oil pump as he blue printed the block. 454 mark IV. The cam and distributor were existing. The only change was the oil pump. I have read that the bronze alloy gears will have a tendency to incur this kind of damage unless a hole is drilled in the lifter galley at the oil pump end to relieve some pressure on the gear. (as a bypass)

My ? is, can I use a gear of some other material to rectify this situation, or should I put back the stock oil pump. The distributer has a small amount of play on the shaft, so I don't think it is bottomed out on the oil pump.

Grumpy knows the oil relief mod on a BBC.

I don't think it is possible to spray a direct Jet stream of oil on the distributor gear like it's done on a Pontiac V8.

Couple of mods can be done on a Chevy V8.
Run a Composite plastic Polymer Fiberglass reinforced distributor gear instead.
About $100.00.

Take a Hacksaw blade and make a relief cut channel VERTICLE in the distributor housing to the distributor gear.
This mod I know works helps to slowdown or stop all wear.

welcome to the forum.

your issue is very likely caused by a mis-match in the correct distributor to cam gear materials
contact the cam manufacturer
and (800) 999-0853
ask what distributor gear material and ideally part number if they know, should be used and then buy and install it.
(be sure its the proper one for the intended application, and coat it liberally with moly cam lube,)https://www.summitracing.com/parts/crn-99004-1
theres hundreds of thousands of guys using high volume oil pumps without changes or problems.
but its all too common for guys to match a new cam to an old partly worn and in many cases improper distributor gear.

READ THE RELATED INFO CAREFULLY AND USE A GOOD MOLY LUBE ON THE DISTRIBUTOR AND CAM GEARS

Common issue today .
Distributor gears I think all made in China now unless you find Vintage made in the USA.

SPRAYING DIRECT JET OIL WORKS BEST.

Post pictures if you can.
I use Imigur as a webhosting sites for forums like Grumpys site.
Painless pictures upload and post here.

Billet cans need premium Amco bronze distributor gears stress relieved.
Cyrogenic treatment done by 300F below company will help.
Or Polymer gear.

I like crane cams rolles, work with stock distributor gear ,billet core with cast distributor gear, and lobes work hi rpm ,no extreme energy woodoo
Valvetrain last long

Comp I try and avoid.
Only good from them is Hi-Tech Drag series.
Have to use Race Gas with those cams.
Pump gas incompatible.
