I highly recommend getting your hands and eyes on a copy of "How To Build High Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s" by Will Handzel.
It's a compilation of GM manuals and tech notes from mechanics that are quite involved with R & R, bolt on power, short cuts, adaptations and much much more! Great reading!
