October Car Craft Magazine......"Big Bang Big Block"

The article is not on the Internet yet, so no link.

But what they did was take a big block out of a 90 one ton truck, did nothing to it but ad a mild hydraulic cam, (529 lift, 226/234 at .050),and some Race Rite Aluminum Heads. They kept the cast crank, the powdered metal rods, and cast pistons. They did regap the rings to keep them from closing.

Added....... Two turbos, 76 mm models from CXRacing, that would allow up to 29 pounds of boost blowing through a modified 850 Holley.

They tested first with no turbos, just the heads and cam. It made 442 HP at 5200, and 477 ft lbs of torque at 3900. Not bad for about 8 to 1 compression.

With the turbos, starting at 7 pounds of boost, the Hp went to 607, and torque at 667. 8.3 pounds of boost yielded 657 HP, 11psi went to 730, and 16.4 psi yielded 869 HP, and then 958 HP at 19.2 psi. Torque was at 1032 ft lbs
.

They then went to racing gas, and finally hit 1237 HP and 1322 ft lbs of torque at just over 29 psi of boost.

They flogged the devil out of this "junk yard" engine, and the cast crank, cast pistons, and stock rods never gave up.

It's a pretty good read, this article is keeping with their "Blue Collar" 454 builds.

Everybody is always taking about just pulling a 5.3 LS out of a junker and stacking on some turbos. Well, this shows what a basic Rat Motor is capable of using the same guidelines.

I kinda wish they would have left the peanut port heads on, just to see what could be had. But they didn't.

I similar aspirations to do the same Grumpy.
I still am intrigued with 427 Tall Deck BBC I have.
When I find extra funds $$$, I will do something with it to make you smile large.
I don't think it has the later Peanut port heads on it.
Special BBC 1983-84 Grain Truck heads only & Oval port design of some sort.
My sources say the Exhaust valves are hollow stemed Sodium filled.

Like to Twin Turbo The 1970 Pontiac 455 I have.
Use the New Crower Forged Rods I had custom made.
Or the Exotic Crower Titanium Rods I have also made for Pontiac V8.
Only Diamond Pistons Fit the bill.
Best made.

Look for the October Car Craft Magazine after work tomorrow .
Payday.

Hellcat can be beat. Takes planning & some scratch to do it. $$.

thats awesome, but buying a set of aluminum big block heads automatically puts it out of "junkyard build" territory. what did they do for fuel and ignition control? draw thru carb? blow thru carb? efi? id love to read the article when it comes out.

the big block has more clamping force on the cylinder heads than a factory LS series but the true extent of the four bolt LS design isnt realized until about 20 psi, then you should get some studs, after 35-40 youre gonna be puking head gaskets so its time to upgrade to an aftermarket six bolt setup

I thought it was kinda interesting that at a little over 2 atmospheres (16.4 psi) it
got close to doubling the HP from 442 to 869. Essentially horsepower is only limited
the the materials available. If you think about it, the rods, piston, crank, block ...
never broke, then you could just keep adding more and more boost until you could
turn the earth backwards momentarily with a good launch in the right direction. ;)

There is always a Limit Rick....
Its called Destructive Testing.

Rather play it somewhat safe with Old School Brand Name parts & Made In The USA.

Something to think about also.....
Huge HP Means Huge Torque numbers. Can't have HP Without Torque.
Its a Mathmatical derivative HP.

Not many transmisssions up to the task.
Turbo 400. 4L80E. Powerglide. 6L80E.
727 Torqueflite.
Ford C4 & C6.
And whatever trans in that new Hellcat.

LENCO For Stick car guys.

Most of us know a 10 bolt rear won't work.
Ditto for any Corvette IRS REAR.

how much power you think those winters quick change can withstand? i think they may be lighter than an 8.8 even

I don't honest know Phil.
At least 900 HP normally aspirated in a Winged Warrior Dirt Sprint car.
Turbo boost can be set to leave the line kinda soft as you know. 60 foot times 1.5- 1.7 should be plenty safe.
Boost does amazing things to make instant HP & torque when you want it NOW.

Its lighter than a Ford 8.8 Solid axle like from a 5.0 stang or crown Vic cop car .
Its a beautifull design quick change rear the Winters or Hailbrand rear.

yea i dont necessarily need the capability of the gear change, but the light weight and strength combined make me feel good. you can score used ones on racingjunk.com for between 5-800 bucks. may be worth looking into once i start overpowering the stock irs

Its worth checking into Phil.
I have not ever seen a Quick change Winters or Hailbrand rear break.
Its Race Jewelry to see in person & touch. Admire in Awe....................
