Bleeding the Brakes By Yourself with Solo Bleeders

I came across the "Solo Bleeder" by Earl's in this book that I have. The author thought they were great. Has anyone tried these, how did they work ???

yes they usually work, i had several until I made the stupid mistake of loaning out my brake tools :roll:

you obviously can,t leave them in-place so when you remove them in some applications you can let air into the system, in others its no big deal, I just find that if theres two guys its far easier to do the old pump press , hold.. release,the bleeder with clear tube so you can see brake fluid flow into as catch bottle, tighten, the bleeder , let the petal up and pump routine. if you have only yourself, yeah they work, I prefer to drag the wife into the shop to pump the brake petal, personally

Why do you say they can't be left installed ? According to Holley you can.
 
I don,t think mine were HOLLEY OR EARLS BRAND, I bought mine 20 years ago, at NAPA if I remember correctly... and have not seen them in 3-4 years, but the ones I had also said they could be left in, yet they ALWAYS LEAKED SLOWLY, and were always damp with brake fluid
OBVIOUSLY they must have improved the quality and just as obviously you should pull out and measure the thread type pitch and diam.of your current bleeders before ordering replacement parts because charts are not always 100% correct

I use the Russel brand (speed bleeder) and they worked fine for me. I left them in and after I bleed and I cover the bleeder with the rubber cap...

those RUSSEL brand look a bit more durable in basic design to me, but then I don,t remember which brand I previously tried
 
now I recently found these little clear canisters deals with taps for clear plastic hose that when used with a vacuum pump gun make bleeding the air,out of a hydraulic clutch or brake lines far easier and far less messy, and it allows you to do it effectively by your self if you have enough plastic hose, you simply crack the bleed valve, on the brake caliper or clutch slave cylinder, then slip a clear plastic hose that fits tightly on the bleed valve nipple
(usually 1/4" or 5/16" plastic hose)between the brake slave cylinder or calipers and route one end to the canister, route a second plastic tube to your vacuum gun and pour brake fluid into the master cylinder while pumping the gun, the old fluid collects in the canister.
the great thing here is that its use it makes it a one man job and you can use longer plastic hose so you can stand next too the master cylinder to make sure its never going low on fluid, as you keep it topped off, while you pump out the old brake or hydraulic fluid

OBVIOUSLY they must have improved the quality and just as obviously you should pull out and measure the thread type pitch and diam.of your current bleeders before ordering replacement parts because charts are not always 100% correct

I HATE bleeding brakes. Not cuz it is tough, but because I need a helper... and I typically work alone.
 
Personally, I partial to the pressure bleeding method. It's a one man job, doesn't make a mess and easy to do. I have a motive power bleeder but you can easily build one from the stuff you can get at a home improvement store.



I use the dry method meaning I dont put any brake fluid in the Motive power bleeder. I just fill the master cylinder, install the power bleeder and pressurize the system. Then I bleed a wheel cylinder while watching the fluid level in the master cylinder. If you run it dry, you have to start all over. For me, this has proven to be the cleanest method when using these things on the master cylinder. If you fill the power bleeder with brake fluid you won't have to keep refilling the master cylinder but it can be messy when you go to remove the power bleeder because the master cylinder will be over filled with fluid and it will spill out. Ether way works great. I can see the vacuum method working well also.
