Building a S̶t̶r̶o̶n̶g̶ ̶3̶5̶0̶ 383 for Frank the Tank…

Yep, that's why I didn't think the $650 mid length 1 3/4 pipes would be a good idea...

There is something I call EMPIRICAL TESTING.....
Just watching others trying....
And my own experience.
When it comes to Small Block Chevies its full length headers.....Or detune the engine power goals and concentrate on Torque for cast iron manifolds.

The only engine GM in my experience that performs steller with cast iron manifolds is the Oldsmobile V8.
Its a strange design engine that breaks the rules.

I looked on Summit Racing Website for Small Block Chevie Full Length Headers Jimmy to fit your 1966 Impala Frank The Tank.
The Aftermarket has Tooled - Geared up for 283ci to 327 ci V8 Small Block Engines.
Thus the 1-5/8" inch primary header tube choices with 3.00 inch collectors.
HOOKER SUPER COMP LONG TUBE HEADERS ARE YOUR BEST CHOICE.
EQUAL LENGTH & TUNED .

I WILL POST FROM MY COMPUTER DIRECT OFF THE SUMMIT RACING WEBSITE NEXT.

IT IS WHAT IT IS.
YOU RAN INTO THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS I DID WITH MY 1987 C4 CORVETTE ROADSTER.
NO BIG TUBE HEADERS ARE AVAILABLE FOR MY CAR FOR UNDER $500.00 BUCKS CASH.

IT ALL STEMS BACK TO THE MID 1970'S TO 1980'S.
RACE TUBE HEADER DESIGN WAS DEVELOPED BY NHRA SUPER STOCK RACERS WORKING CLOSE ONE ON ONE WITH MAJOR MANUFACTURERS LIKE HOOKER, HEADMAN, & DOUGS HEADERS, & STAHL HEADERS.
THE RACE WINNING FIREBIRD TRANS AM, CAMARO, NOVA, CHEVELLE, BUICKS GOT THE NOD GO AHEAD OK FOR BIG TUBE RACE HEADER MASS PRODUCTION.
AND STILL CARRIES ON TODAY.

You must Build for torque.
HP is secondary.
Unless you obtain alot of $$$$.
$2,000 -5,000 cash for headers.
Best in the world spend $10,000 on custom one off headers built to WIN.

I am not Wealthy.
Had to abandon my Corvette drag race project.
All worthless without Big Tube headers.

My 1970-1 /2 Trans Am I have 2 sets if Hooker Big Tube Race #4202 2.00" Primary with 3-1/2 " inch collectors.
One set used I had Jet Hot coated. 20 year old set now.
Other set is Brand New in Hooker box yet. Painted Black.

There are Ways to cheat Jimmy.
Do more with Less HP.
C4 Corvette 1985-1991 With Tuned Port injection is a Prime example.
I can keep up with nearly all or beat them 0-80-100 mph.
After that The Guy with more HP Wins.
The 700 R4 Trans in my Vette with 3.06 :1 1st gear is Key. I have the stock 2.73 Rear Dana 36.
C4 vettes have ultra lightweight Aluminum main driveshaft & Aluminum IRS Halfshafts.
Instant Low mass rotation acceleration .

With Hooker Super Competition headers, the objective has always been to make the maximum horsepower possible and put it at the optimum point in the power curve. Hooker Super Competition headers feature tuned primary tubes to create optimum pressure between the intake and exhaust systems. Hooker Super Competition headers include premium exhaust gaskets and new mounting bolts. Unless otherwise noted, these headers are designed to fit the vehicle as it came from the manufacturer. This includes components like cylinder heads, chassis, steering, motor mounts, body mounts and bushings, etc. If your vehicle is using aftermarket components, parts from other applications, or custom altered parts, then it is the installer's responsibility to verify fitment.

Headers Are The #1 Criteria to me.
Its Either Big Tubes & You have a True Racecar Hellcat destroyer 100-200 mph.

Or Street car.
Build for torque.
Hellccat Killer, No....

yeah it looks like 1 5/8 headers are about all your going to get for your impala. Remember when you gasketmatch and clean up your bowls in your heads you're going increase your flow maybe 3-5 cfm at full exhaust lift probably more on intake side.

It makes sense what you say about the manufacturers being geared towards 283 & 327 for the 66 Impala... But, that's a shame for me..o_O

Is the "equal length tuned" part particularly important to the output in a mild 383? Can you explain what the main difference in performance will be between the Super Comps and Comps would be?

They appear to be similar other then the comps are thicker steel and an inch longer in primary tube length.. The super comps are 2.5 the $$$

Ah ok, good to know.. Every little bit will count.. particularly the bits that only really cost elbow grease... ;)

Tuned Headers like The 1966 Impala SBC Hooker Super Comps are worth the extra money if you can afford.
They Maximize the individual cylinder scavenging Grumpy talks about.
Takes place on the Valve overlap camshaft events.
Likely worth 40-50 ft/lbs average torque increase from off idle to engine Redline.
Doing the HP Math and its worth at least 15-30 HP Peak.

Hooker Competition are Ok.
I have used prior.
Affordable.
But Hooker Super Comps are SUPERIOR BY FAR.

A Free Flow Daul exhaust system will work best.
Or Grumpys X-pipe layout.
I am sure you have to fabricate from scratch X-pipe on a 1966 Impala 4-dr.

I've spent the last couple of evenings starting to do some of my clearance checking... It's a slow process, and I want to do as best as I can with my skill level and the tools at my disposal....

Follow the steps related to bearing clearances in the book I just bought:

Rebuilding the Small-Block Chevy: Step-by-Step Videobook
61kuZP-dyyL._SX386_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

I tried to check crank run out, but realised that the spring back action in my cheap dial indicator had stopped springing back... Serves me right for going cheap... argh:mad:

So I moved on to Main bearing clearances..

From what I can see there's a few differing ideas on how much clearance is needed.....

The above book says .002" - .0035"

I found mention of crank diameter x a number, and elsewhere .002"-.003"...

Anyway, using plastigauge I checked the main bearing clearances twice and got .003" on all journals, both times... maybe slightly bigger..but not smaller (its hard to get any real accuracy with the plastigauge..)

Is that what I'm after?

Does anyone concur or not that .003" clearance on a mild 383 is in the range?

I will check the crank end-play tomorrow night...

Reading that books a great start,
.003 is on the looser end of the acceptable range,
you can use bearings that are slightly tighter,
or just go with what you have now and use a higher viscosity oil to maintain the expected oil pressure range on the gauge.
the looser bearing clearance has the advantage of allowing higher oil flow rates that can potentially cool the bearings faster but that higher flow requires more oil control, so a 7-8 quart baffled oil pan, windage tray etc. are a good idea

What oil pump are you using? I agree, I would use a higher viscosity oil and maybe use a 10% over stock oil pump to keep the pressure up.

Reading that books a great start,

Ok. Great, thanks Grumpy.

I have an oversize oil pan and planned to use one of the basic windage trays with that.

I'll read through all the links.
