Building a S̶t̶r̶o̶n̶g̶ ̶3̶5̶0̶ 383 for Frank the Tank…

Well Jimmy, your plugs look better than Rick's did with those mystery deposits.;) Sorry Rick, couldn't help myself.
Your engine should be all straightened out now. Fingers crossed.

Ha! I'll have to go over and check that out... I haven't kept up with Rick's engine build for a while...

Oh ok..!

So, not oil..? Which would be a relief...

It's a 725cfm Holley with Vac Secondary. As I mentioned earlier the tuner that looked at it said the vacuum was a bit low for the 6.5 power valve.. Could that be it? It does smell the garage out if left to idle... I'll have a look at the rubber diaphragm over the weekend..

There is a wet fluid (oil or fuel) right down the threads.. is that normal..? If running rich.. Should any fluid get to the base of the threads?
Its so pig rich your washing some oil off of the cylinder walls.
It will Live again after tuning.
I worked some of the Best EFI Tuners in South Chicago.
Guinness with EFI & Turbos.
Total Retards with carburetors & Building Race Engines.

Couple of questions..

Th350 trans kickdown - does having it connected (or not) impact shift points at WOT from a standing start, for example a drag race..? I've had two opposing opinions.. some said no effect in this situation, others say it does.. my kickdown is not connected.. the trans shifts way early.. I manual shifted last time at the track and plan to calibrate the governor over winter... I will connect the kickdown, but does it impact drag race changes..?

Carb rebuild kits - I'm planning to rebuild my holley 4150 725cfm vac secondary list-4118-s carb... there's a two rebuild kits on summit they are very spendy.. I think because I have an oddball carb.. should I buy the trick kit or the renew kit..? Or, something else..?

If its an old odd ball Holley from the 1970s it likely is best to replace with more modern for tuning and parts convinces.
I bought my used Holley 770 cfm Street Avenger for $150.
Trick kit to rebuild was $35.00.
Additional tuning parts bought later about $150.

New a Street Avenger is about $450.
Made up to 870 cfm.

There is AED Carburetors.
A 650 HO OR 750 HO Be a nice choice.

You have Quickfuel.

You want a Holley that you can make tuning changes to in 10-15 minutes at home or at the track.
Keeps it fun.

Your best off to install a Transgo TH350 Shift Kit.
Kit will allow you to make it Automatic and Manual shift.
Down Low 1 The Governor is over ridden. Will not upshift till you manual shift to 2 nd or 3rd.

Agree with Brian if the kit is super expensive I would change carb out for 1 easier to tune. And you can not go wrong with a transgo reprogrammer kit.

Hmm.. access to good used carbs is worse here in NZ than it was in Australia.. I'll keep an eye out for a decent price used 750 or 770 for rebuild later...I'm looking at close to $900 for a new carb.. :(

The carb I have was a Ford high performance Holley 725 cfm 4 barrel carburetor. It is a dual feed 4150 series unit. Ford sold this carburetor through their parts department as a high performance replacement carburetor for Shelby Mustangs as well as other high performance Ford equipped vehicles looking for more CFM since most standard Ford Holley carburetors were around 600 cfm. It was deigned for their 289 and 302 engines, but could be fitted to any engine capable of handling 725 CFM.

In the meantime the trick kit at $160 should cover what I need after also adding a new secondary diaphragm..?

The transmission was rebuilt only 12 months ago.. I'm keen to do what I can to tune it as is right now.. there's quite a few more pressing repairs needed.. to soak up my $$

I'll hook up the kickdown and find out that way if it effects WOT shifting from a standing start and then try adjusting the governor weights to aim for higher shifts.. when I get around to getting a useful dyno run and sheet, then I'll calibrate shifts to the right rpm shift points..

What is the List Number on the Choke Airhorn Jimmy ?
It will be stamped in.
The Date code also.

Its not that old.
It has the quickchange Vacuum secondary cover like my Holley Street Avenger.

How much is the Trick kit for it to rebuild ?

An AED High Flow Power Valve is better than the stock Holley part.
Summit Racing has them.
A Jet assortment kit from Holley or others will allow you to fine tune the Carb in.
