"Grumpy I just found a bad cam lobe to be the problem , I was tracking down as to why my engine runs like crap, well I can replace the cam and lifter of course but several friends suggest I pull and clean the block and replace the bearings as there is in their opinion a bunch of metallic trash circulating in the engine? well?"

there will be a near endless list of guys you will talk too ,who have had a cam lobe fail or wear out and have just swapped in the new replacement cam and lifters and "GOT AWAY WITH IT" the truth is that the metallic debris did do damage to the oil pump gears and some got embedded in the bearings,

thats UN-avoidable because the oil filter never catches everything and the debris passes thru the oil pump gears before it has any chance of having the oil filter trap the crap in the oil flow. Ive done it in the past and I have zero doubt others have also, but Ive also taken the time to pull down and close;ly inspect the bearings in engines after a cam lobe failed and every last time I found debris embedded in the bearings and trash in the oil pump and blocks internal passages, its your call, but the best course of action is to clean out the trash and replace the bearings and cam and lifters and clean the block because theres ALWAYS metallic trash that causes more damage eventually. yes it might take another 10K-20K miles but it WILL increase wear and its ALWAYS going to reduce the engines potential life expectancy if its not removed
