a couple of days ago BOB and his friend stopped by with a minor issue with a Plymouth road runner after a tune-up, well this morning they stopped by with an older 1970 caddy, with a 500 cid engine .
I get asked for my opinion or help frequently, most guys either want me to do the work or point out what needs to be done!
THE PROBLEM WAS A BAD MISS, I have worked on several 500 caddy engines so I was familiar with them, I eventually located the bad or let me say non-functioning cylinder by individually pulling and replacing the ignition wires on the distributor cap, until I found one whose removal had no effect, ON HOW THE ENGINE IDLED, INDICATING THAT CYLINDER WAS NOT FULLY FUNCTIONING. ONCE LOCATED a quick compression test showed it had very similar 140 psi pressure as the rest, OF THE CYLINDERS SO IT WAS NOT LIKELY TO BE A BURNT VALVE.
I pulled that side of the engines, valve cover and found that particular cylinders exhaust rocker, showed almost zero cam lobe lift, indicating either a worn cam lobe or worn lifter.
I asked if we wanted to diagnose this further , and the reply I got indicated they had suspected that cause ," but ED didn,t feel it was worth fixing"
now I know I,m short on cash most of the time so I fully understand , but this is only likely to cascade and get worse as wear increases, and the fine metallic crap generated by that wear caused further damage, at the very least they should change the oil and filter and park the car so no more extensive damage continues
