a couple of days ago BOB and his friend stopped by with a minor issue with a Plymouth road runner after a tune-up, well this morning they stopped by with an older 1970 caddy, with a 500 cid engine .
I get asked for my opinion or help frequently, most guys either want me to do the work or point out what needs to be done!
THE PROBLEM WAS A BAD MISS, I have worked on several 500 caddy engines so I was familiar with them, I eventually located the bad or let me say non-functioning cylinder by individually pulling and replacing the ignition wires on the distributor cap, until I found one whose removal had no effect, ON HOW THE ENGINE IDLED, INDICATING THAT CYLINDER WAS NOT FULLY FUNCTIONING. ONCE LOCATED a quick compression test showed it had very similar 140 psi pressure as the rest, OF THE CYLINDERS SO IT WAS NOT LIKELY TO BE A BURNT VALVE.
I pulled that side of the engines, valve cover and found that particular cylinders exhaust rocker, showed almost zero cam lobe lift, indicating either a worn cam lobe or worn lifter.
I asked if we wanted to diagnose this further , and the reply I got indicated they had suspected that cause ," but ED didn,t feel it was worth fixing"
now I know I,m short on cash most of the time so I fully understand , but this is only likely to cascade and get worse as wear increases, and the fine metallic crap generated by that wear caused further damage, at the very least they should change the oil and filter and park the car so no more extensive damage continues

Unless Bob was a good friend that had returned favors, I would have felt a
little bit used. Sounds like that just wanted you to do the work and confirm
what they already thought.

Rebuilding the Caddy 500ci V8 would be a good side job.
I would take it on.
Do the Valvejob myself on my Sioux Valve grinder & seat machine.
American made engine rebuild kit could be bought for $700-1K.
Nothing fancy. The essentials.
$500-650 In machine work.
Remove engine, tear down.
Assemble & Blueprint.
Reinstall & tune.
$2k for me.
Or $2k for Grumpy.
No one should work for free.

BOB and I have been friends for several years, and while it might look like hes taking advantage, hes really not, he comes by and helps out occasionally and rarely wants me to do much more than point out mistakes or give him ideas .
and yes it would normally look like a good way to make some extra cash, fixing a car, but I,m fairly sure that neither BOB or ED has much if any spare cash at this time to either make repairs personally or pay anyone else to do it for them.
the sad part is that the cars likely to get driven in the current condition eventually destroying the engine!
I pointed out the likely cost or rings, bearings cam, lifters, gaskets and a bore and hone plus cleaning out the blocks oil passages, a valve job etc.
there,s places that sell rebuilt long block assemblies much cheaper than the potential parts and machine work costs locally

Stupid Liberals.

Watching everything fall apart.

Fix Clunkers all day long at work.

Everyone we know is suffering Grumpy.
I get Furious too.

Caddy 500ci V8 is a Torque monster.
Be a shame to let it get destroyed.
550 Ft/lbs in 1970.
Around 360 Hp.

In Florida its best built in your garage Grumpy.
Done Right the 1st time.

Good to hear Grumpy, you must of enjoyed the couple of hours with Bob then.
I was afraid it was another freeloader story!
