cleaning a short block

"hey grumpy, I purchased a used short block to get a spare block for a build, how do I go about cleaning it?"

Id take my time, buy a larger size plastic storage container, and get 5 gallons of diesel fuel, clean all thread holes with a cleaning tap, not a cutting tap.

AFTER YOU CAREFULLY mark each connecting rod and main cap , and its location and stamp rod and rod cap , with a stamp set ,dissemble the components and use a stiff brush set, along with the fuel splashed as needed in the block after placing it in the container

disassemble the block to the point all freeze plugs and oil passage plugs are removed and get fresh cam bearings, obviously once its clean you paint all the non machined surfaces and cover the machined surfaces with oil, place the clean block in a sealed engine storage bag, place the crank and rods etc. after cleaning them in a large plastic storage container it can be used to further protect the components if stored
use of a long reach air spray nozzle if you have a compressor and a few rifle bore brushes helps
