I have a 4 ft roll of chicken wire, how far away from the trunk does it have to be around the tree and more importantly will it even work. I spent too much on these Silver Maples to let the deer kill them now. Any thoughts?

Yes the fencing is almost mandatory, fencing thats about 5 feet tall and 3 feet away all the way around and firmly supported will help,
but deer repellent frequently sprayed on and around trees and especially if you have a large dog you can have piss on the area to further provide a scent barrier helps, my dash-hounds loved to chase the local deer, I loved to watch the dash-hounds run up to the property boundary, where they stopped, they would come back with the tails wagging furiously, acting like they kicked the deer,s ass!
the deer were less impressed, by the dash-hounds, they did not like the noisy dogs,
but simply walked away acting like the dogs were no real threat, just annoying! little P.I.T.A.

Yes, it just occurred to me this is the first deer season without Raven and it's the first time in years the deers are back scraping the trees. I'm going to try the repellent first as it seems the easiest and the cheapest. I only hope there isn't any permanent damage to the trees.

I found it was easier to bring them lunch and let them visit the Christmas deer.

Thanks

you could mix it into olive oil and smear it on any surface the deer have easy access too with a paint brush,
they do that around here on wood rails on horse stalls,in stables.
too keep the horses from gnawing on the wood rails, in the stalls, and it seems to work well!

you could sure try it, the cost is low enough that you have little to lose financially
