Dana 60 - all the same?

Home from working a 1/2 day Saturday Richard.

We have to know the exact rear tire track of your 1965 GTO Convertible.
1964 - 1965 GTO A-body has the same Pontiac built 8.2" inch differential.
You want to save the stock rear diff.
Very hard to come by today.
Resell to another that may or will need it.

Remove the rear wheels after you have your GTO up on 4 heavy duty jack stands.
Or have the GTO up in the air on your 2- post car lift.
You can use a tape measure & 2 yardsticks measure axle shaft flange to axle shaft flange.

A better way is to Tie a string to each side off one wheel stud flush against the axle shaft flange.
Hang a 1/2"-13 nut or similar off the very end of the strings.
Adjust the strings so they just hang off the concrete floor 1/4".
Take a piece of white chalk and mark on the concrete floor where the Bob Weight nuts hover.
Then measure From Chalk Line to Chalk Line with a Premium Stanley Tape Measure or similar.'

Id love to get it , but as you know moneys tight, but give me some pictures and a price so I can sell one of my grand kids to the gypsy's, or something ,next time they seriously piss me off!

I did a long time ago Grumpy, you forgot, I sometimes forget I have the Dana 60 myself.
You Know Richard as I do.....His Plans change almost Bi-weekly.
If he goes to a Barret Jackson Auction or similar he is done....a new car or truck is brought home.

I don't have to sell.....I can use the Dana 60 myself ....I want a rear diff I build for another on a Forum Online RACED 2,000% Full Bore !

Ok, you know I won't back out of this deal, do you want a deposit? I just would like a price as it sits presently but even though I'm ok with you being busy I still would like some reasonable expectation of what "need time" means for you.
Details can be sent by pm if you like.

I only change my mind before anyone else is involved - never after I or the other person makes any commitment or on small transactions like this.
If I search well enough I could show you where I said I would like to buy this rear a few years ago.

I keep my word Richard.
I thought about ebay in the past & listing...Grumpy said to sell it along time ago.
But I hung onto the D60-2.

I don't recall you saying you wanted my Dana 60, might have but I don't now.

I am sure its worth at least $425.00

Mind is on Racing tonight.
Getting back on DC.....what a Ghost Town..........Holy Crap.'
Corvette should Be #1.

I conducted a lot of deals with Gary from New Haven, CT (GTR1999 on DC) he rebuilt 1 IRS and helped me do 2 (a 71 and 72) online as complete rebuilds. In fact I just sent him some NOS GM rag joints and seals just collecting dust here.
He doesn't do straight axles otherwise I would have one from him by now

I haven't done my homework for exactly what you have in regards to this rear, if you say it's $425 I'm not going to haggle over that and give that to you when you say you need it.

I would like you to do the work necessary to be ready for bolt on and run. It's too bad you don't have the time or space Otherwise I could just ship the car to you for this and other work.

The only one with the Means in the group to build a New Garage present is You Richard.

The Dana 60 , you need to take measurements 1st. Make sure the Dana 60 I have will fit as is.
I think it has to be Narrowed to fit the 1965 GTO.

I looked around today for published Rear Track Width of the 1964-1965 GTO Richard.
Its 58.0 " inches.
They are measuring from the centerline of each rim/tires.
I found no actual measurements from Axle Flange to axle flange or brake drum to brake drum.
The 1963 F100 Dana 60-2 I have is 61-1/2" to 61-7/8" axle flange to axle flange I recall.
About the same as the 1970 & 191 Hemi 'Cuda & Hemi Challanger Dana 60.

Also my Dana 60 has leaf spring mounts.
I can easily remove.
But has no provisions for the 1964-1972 Pontiac GTO Upper control arms.
They were integral casted in the Pontiac GTO 10-bolt housings.

The best way is to Race Car 4-Link.
Once your committed there is no turning back.
Drag Race Car.

I have seen Custom ears welded to cast iron housings for GM upper control arm mounts in GM A- body & G-body musclecars.
I don't like that method myself.

There is the Pontiac 9.3 like my 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix has.'
But finding Factory Posi traction is very difficult today & expensive. They bring or are bought for $1300 - $2,000.
Non Posi sells for $100- 300 and no one wants them.....Posi only desired.

There are aftermaket custom Dana 60 housings but it will cost $2,0000- $ 4,000 when its all done and built.

A built Ford 9" inch cost $ too.
About $2,000 built right. Low Budget junkyard methods & parts with a 9 inch....Cross your Fingers....Good Luck.

Chevy 12-bolt rear diffs cost alot $$$$ today....$2,0000 +.
Kind of a crappy rear diff but they work OK but can blow up any time drag racing hard.

The Dana 60-2 has been used by a few Mopar Guys I read online on the Mopar musclecar forums.
They didn't want to spend $5,000 cash on an original Mopar B-body & E-body Dana 60.
Took the Dana 60-2 & just welded on their Leaf spring mounts.'
Ran Low 11's & High 10's Bone stock Dana 60-2.

I found the Dana 60-2 for Grumpy after reading....Bought it .

The Strange Engineering Super 60 A-body GM To fit your 1965 GTO Convertible is $2,139.99 on Summit Racing Richard.
For Coil Spring Mount. Upper and lower control arm layout.
With A Racing Spool. No brakes included.

Posi Traction or a Detroit Locker for the Street will cost another $500-800 .

Corvette Diffs I typically build for $900-1400 labor included.

The Dana 60's I have built for Racing were Original Mopar Muslecars Dana 60's for my Close bud Mopar Bob.
Or all out 9-second ET Cars 3,000-3,200lbs & 4-link Race rear layouts.

Ok.
What I am saying there is no Free Lunch in this case with the 1965 GTO.
Decisions weighed and made.
Almost better off starting with a Bare Dana 60 Housing made by Strange Engineering .
Custom order it.
I am in Illinois and I can pick it up in person.
Cost for bare housing with tubes pressed in and Axle housing ends be about $675-700 your cost or mine.

Some of the other Rear Diffs we have seen for Corvettes sell for $8,500 +.
Drag Race Special C5, C6 , & C7 cost is $10,000-20,000+.
