AT $1456 there not CHEAP but they a certainly a BARGAIN compared to putting $1000 in machine work into a 35 plus year old Chevy block that's no ware near as strong and very likely to be rusted internally and one that might have cracks,
the stock OEM components are rated by chevy, to with stand 350-400hp and 5700rpm-6000rpm,obviously we all no guys that have pushed their components to exceed those limits, but stress is cumulative, and the harder you push or the more frequently you push past those limits the more likely you are to experience component failures
look at the rated hp

the DART SHP Chevy Small Blocks are significantly stronger castings in the stressed areas and are rated UP TOO 600hp, the little m blocks are even stronger

and at $1000 less than their full race block its a deal for a street/strip engine combo

whats the difference?

its got a bit less machine work, its not quite as thick and its got less nickle in the casting, and theres less options

New Dart Shp Block (pics)

Finally got one of the new SHP block in from Dart, So far I have measured the lifter bores and they measure .8443 no taper, The center main cap came with no washer under the head of the bolt. I disassembled the mains caps cleaned caps and hardware and re lubed the washers and the bolts with CMD-3 and re torqued and the rear main cap was 2.6407 the 3 center caps were 2.641 and front cap is 2.6408 as this will have to be addressed with a line hone.

I noticed the freeze plug holes on the sides of the blocks are beveled and the freeze plug holes in the front and rear and cam plug are not beveled.

It does look like the cam tunnel can be machined for BBC and 50MM cam tunnel with no issues. "

There has been much talk in the performance community lately concerning the arrival of “bargain” performance blocks and heads from various sources. These parts generally claim to be high quality performance pieces at extremely low prices. Sometimes the sellers don’t mention much about the materials used, the quality control, or where they’re made. Sometimes they are misleading about it, and sometimes they outright lie about these facts.

At Dart, our focus is creating great engine parts, right here in the U.S.A. We usually just shake our heads and move on when we see this sort of thing happening. But once in a while we get fed up with the bottom feeders and we decide to do something about it.

This is one of those times.

Starting October 1st 2009 and ending December 31st, 2009 we will be making an unprecedented offer to all of our customers and associates.

Our Little M Sportsman series blocks, part numbers 31151111, 31151211, 31152111 and 31152211, will be available at a special $200.00 universal discount.

Our regular Little M blocks, part numbers 31131111, 31131211, 31132111 and 31132211, will be available at a special $300.00 universal discount.

ALL customers, from our biggest warehouse distributors, to our numerous friends in the racing community, to the guy building his street rod in the garage, will receive this special pricing across the board.

Our blocks are high quality, U.S. performance pieces and we know they’re a better value than these “bargain” offerings out there. We don’t need to be misleading about their quality or where they’re made.

From October to December, we are declaring war.
Our intent is to send the “bargain” blocks packing by offering you a far superior piece at a comparable price.
Why consider a questionable engine block when you can get the best? It’s a win-win.
Get an awesome block, at an awesome price – designed, cast, machined and packaged 100% here in the good ol’ U.S.A.

If you’re thinking about buying a new block… there shouldn’t be any question where it’s going to come from.

- Thanks to all our loyal customers, fans, friends and associates, from Dart. .

yes its real, but each retailer sets his own retail price regardless of wholesale cost, he paid,
some retailers will just see that wholesale price drop as extra potential profit, some already paid the higher cost on blocks already in their inventory
so shop around and ALWAYS, ASK IF POSTED PRICES ARE CURRENT AND FIRM,, ALWAYS ASK IF THERES ANY DEALS AVAILABLE CURRENTLY OR IN THE NEAR FUTURE, as on occasion some shops have, parts for projects that got canceled, or they might be willing to give a better price on a package deal if you buy some other parts (frequently the case)
