Desk top dyno as a tuning tool

Grumpy or any one else here used desktop dyno or any other simulation program to tune engine timing or use info to create a base fuel map???

Thanks Grumpy thats what I thought I have my wideband installed already and soon enough a bunch of other sensors to give me lots of info. I just didn't know if there was an accurate enough sim to figure out the best available. It is crazy the variables that can change a tune. Do you feel that the reason why was the fact that the entered data is not accurate enough to provide an accurate solution to the problem. We all know garbage in garbage out and that simulation programs give great results with relative accuracy when speculating an engine build of modification as long as good information is plugged in the software.

I also know and realize what is on paper does not always translate to the real world. Lately with my voyage into EFI I have been reading countless literature on engine tuning as I plan to program my ECU myself. I have come to realize efi is just like what Rick has been doing when he is tuning but you can't program in changes for variables such as temp and altitude into a carburetor. But all in all your goals are the same just allot more of them.

Engine analizer pro is cool, I have downloaded the demo and played with it when I was specing my cam change out. I like the visualizer it is cool to get an idea of what goes on in the engine. Desktop Dyno is nice to I have a version of it on my home computer and the results where very close to engine analizer with the same inputs.

I am just trying to figure good ways to figure out Maximum Brake Torque with out a dyno. Even if I can get pretty close with out use of a dyno. I guess either way I need to figure a way to measure results fairly accurately with out a dyno or drag strip.

John,

I bought the AQ-1 for the fact that I can measure acceleration. This gives me a
way to actually measure my changes for good or bad, just like using a dyno or 1/4
mile times. Otherwise I would be tuning for a A/F ratio of say 12.5 and having to
call that the best performance without knowing for sure.

It doesn't give me a get of jail free card thou. I still have to pay attention to the
variables that cannot be controlled .... air temperature, humidity, surface
temperature, surface texture, engine temperature, oil temperature, transmission
temperature ......etc.

You mentioned a bunch more sensors ... did you buy something? What system?

Actually the only sensors I will have that you don't is MAP sensors which are built into the ecu
the current sensor list I have to buy is
58x reluctor wheel Hall or VR
cam sensor so ecu knows which stroke or Timing Phase Angle Reference
Air Temp
Water Temp
Throttle Position
Still need a second Wideband don't have to have it but want it.
Plus I want to incorporate a knock sensor
