Diff oil for the 10 bolt?

I want to change the oil and clean up the inside of the diff on Frank the Tank...

Its a 1966 10 bolt 8.2" open diff (as far as I can tell from the outside..).

What sort of oil am I after from the local auto supplies store? and what sort of volume would it need?

Another question that comes to mind.... Are there any low buck ways to increase the durability of the diff? I'll definitely replace it in time, and drive it gentle when the 383 is in place... but, is there any inexpensive upgrades that will improve its chances of surviving till the budget is revived...? ;)

Standard 75-90 w gear oil was used original Jimmy in the GM 8.2" REAR DIFF IN FRANK THE TANK.

I AM A BIG BELIEVER IN SYNTHETIC OILS.
ROYAL PURPLE SYNTHETIC GEAR OILS ARE MY FAVORITE .
I USE 75-140 W ON THE STREET IN MY OWN. EVEN IN MY OLD K1500 SUBURBAN FRONT AND REAR DIFFS.
FOR DRAG RACING USE 85-140 W.

REDLINE SHOCKPROOF GEAR OIL IS EXCELLENT TOO.
THE 140W IS USED BY ALL THE IMPORT AWD TUNER GUYS.
THE STUFF IS RED PINK IN COLOR.

THE LOWEST COST MOD IS USE A SYNTHETIC GEAR OIL.

NEXT BESR IS USE CASTROL DINO 85-140W GEAR OIL TYPE C.

NEED TO BUY 3 QUARTS OF GEAR OIK.
WILL USE 2 QUARTS AND SOME OF THE 3RD QUART BOTTLE.

WE ARE 2 CLASSES OF HOTRODDERS TODAY.
MEGA RICH BUY IT ALL.
SPEND $100,000 BUCKS ON A ZO6 AND HAVE IT BLOW UP FROM METAL MACHINE CHIPS BREAKING FREE AND LOCKING UP THE ENGINE.
BUY A NEW HELLCAT FOR $60,000.
RACE PROBLEM FREE.

AND THE REST POOR FLAT ASS BROKE ALMOST.

I NEVER SOLD ANYTHING .
TIME IS READY FOR ME TO BUILD AGAIN.

GOOD STEADY BETTER PAYING JOB THE KEY FACTOR .

Thanks Brian. I'm on it :)

Is there anything else you would recommend on the cheap to strengthen the diff? I don't really want to spend anything on it... but if it lengthens its life some...?

You already answered your own question Jimmy..... "I DON'T WANT TO SPEND ANY MONEY ON IT."

YOU WANT A PRO BUILT DANA 60 EVENTUALLY .
OR A 1957-64 PONTIAC 9.300" REAR DIFF WITH DANA POSI TRACK LOCK.
OR A PRO BUILT FORD 9".

CHOOSE HIGH VELOCITY HEADS TO MATCH YOUR CURRENT GEARING .
MOST IMPORTANT .

WASTE OF $ TO DUMP $1,000-3,000 CASH into the GM 8.2".

THE PONTIAC GTO AND FIREBIRD 1964-72 8.2 10-BOLT IS MUCH STRONGER THAN THE CHEVY VERSION.

yeah! Id second the suggestion to just change the gear oil, to a good compatable synthetic,

and perhaps order a magnet to place on the outside surface of the rear differential too trap and hold metallic debris,
that naturally comes off the gear wear surfaces to help reduce the wear,

that fine metallic crap floating around suspended in that differential gear oil could cause thats very easily reduced.

while I don,t think youll have any problems with the stock 10 bolt G.M. differential in its intended application behind the intended 383 sbc,
it certainly will reduce any tendency to fail if its cleaned out and fresh synthetic lubricants used,
as who knows how many miles the old lube has traveled or if its been over heated or gottent contaminated or had moisture in it
