do you carry a spare magazine for your CCW pistol?

maybe its just my engineering back ground here,
but having a back-up plan and/or spare parts,
has always been a good idea in my opinion

but I don,t know very many people that carry a spare magazine for their concealed carry pistol
and I,ve always considered that to be a huge tactical, and obvious practical mistake.
and you might be amazed to find out it has little too do with having the extra shot capacity easily at hand.

statistically most civilian shooting confrontations, with civilian defending against, violent attackers, are at ranges under 20 ft and less than 6 shots are fired., so statistically

even a good quality revolver, youve practiced extensively with, is more than adequate for personal defensive work.
(yes ID suggest a 357 mag or a bit larger caliber)
If your life depends on your effective use of a hand gun, you damn well better make the hits you do make very effective

(but of course it may be mentally comforting to have a semi-auto with a 7-to-18 shot magazine capacity, as under stess most people are less than expert shots

now many of my friends carry 45 acp, 9 mm and 10 mm semi auto pistols as our choice for CCW arms and
the one consistent fact with any semi auto pistol, is that if the magazine is lost, dropped out of the gun or damaged your basically going to have a nearly useless single shot at best pistol.
carrying a spare magazine with a semi-auto is similar to having a spare tire for a car, you may rarely need it but its damn handy to have when you do,
and yes YOU WILL EVENTUALLY NEED IT,

now that might seem to be a really remote and unlikely event, but let me relate a couple short stories
(1)
Jack was a SWAT team member for years and he related two stories that got me to thinking, the SWAT guys carried a GLOCK 9mm pistol, and on one occasion they were interviewing a guy at a recent shooting who they, thought was the victim, he suddenly made a grab for one of the swat cop guys holstered guns, in the instantly resulting struggle the gun was ripped out of the holster and sent spinning too the pavement, when it impacted the concrete sidewalk the magazine lower floor plate broke loose and the spring and all the cartridges spewed onto the ground, as a result , now the other SWAT guys quickly subdued the guy, but the gun on the ground would have been rendered useless, except the owner picked it up, ejected the broken now defective magazine and inserted a spare, so in 3 second he effectively had repaired the defect by swapping to a good functional magazine when the original magazine was rendered useless, thus returning the pistol to operational mode simply by having the spare loaded magazine instantly on hand.

(2) one of Jacks friends was at a local 7/11 picking up some lunch
(IN PLAIN CIVILIAN CLOTHES,) when the idiot behind him in the check-out line at the cashier announced he was robbing the place , and demanded everyone raise their hands , Jacks friend caught at a total disadvantage complied ,as the guy grabbed the register contents and then, backed out of the store waving his gun , the crook, fired a shot into the store and screamed
"you bastards better not follow me"
Jacks friend drew his concealed carry colt 1911 45 acp , announced he was a cop and demanded the robber drop his gun, the robber turned and fired one shot, the cop, fired a return shot, dropping the crook, as he exited the store, but some how during that exchange the magazine in the colt fell out of the gun onto the floor....due to years of training , on the swat team, he instantly and semi- unconsciously ,reacted, the guy instantly inserted his spare magazine and was instantly ready should the guy he just shot have started to shoot back or if he had had an unseen accomplices .
keep in mind that in neither case was magazine capacity a factor , but having a spare functional mag was critical.
