dyno testing high flow cats on exhaust,
the better HIGH FLOW CATS, and low restriction mufflers won,t hurt a thing, realistically , tested against open exhaust losses tend to be minimal or non-existent, they offer very little restriction to flow,if correctly selected for the application and installed with mandrel bent pipes and an (X) pipe, but the cheap cats , old partly clogged cats or use of restrictive mufflers are a different deal.
obviously youll want to do some research and select a low restriction catalytic converter or twin low restriction cats if your forced to use them.
ID also suggest checking exhaust back pressure, with a gauge and use of an infrared temp gun while tuning

heres the one I use and recommend

INFRARED TEMP GUN
you might be surprised at what a few tests show you and how much time and money you can avoid wasting

actually measuring back pressure rather than GUESSING HELPS

obviously if the cats inner exhaust converting matrix block melts from a leaking head gasket or overly rich exhaust , it becomes very restrictive to exhaust flow, killing power, and thus ,it must be replaced
yeah, more links but they contain good info
