Elictrically Boosted Power Brakes

reliable source of info
I have been visiting family in Oregon and today I made it over to my buddy Mike's shop in Corvallis to check out the ABS electrically boosted braking system. We were at SEMA together and were impressed with what we saw of this system. There's info here if you want to take a look at it.

I put together my pro street '58 pickup in Mike's shop in 1997-98, shipped it back to Maui once it was road worthy, and finished it out in my shop. The brake system was set up with the original (new MC) under the floor setup, with the original non-power MC activating a vacuum remote power brake setup. It was a good system, worked great with the front '70 Chevelle frame clip and power disk brake setup, and with the heavy duty ford truck 9" drum system in back. The 502 motor was a bit marginal on vacuum, but in general I got used to it and never had a problem.

As the system is now eleven years old, the remote booster setup has started to show some problems, such as not giving me the braking performance I am used to on a consistent basis. I found that these remote power brake master cylinder setups like I have are not made any more, but that there is a shop in Portland, OR that will rebuild them. I had originally installed an inline 10 psi pressure valve in the brake line to the rear brakes when they were drum brakes, but I removed that when I installed a set of Wilwood brakes in the back. I should have replaced it with a 2 psi valve, as I sometimes experience a slight amount of "bleed back" to the under floor mounted system, which is below both the front and rear brakes. It hasn't been a problem though, as I am aware of what it is and deal with it accordingly.

I want to upgrade the power brake setup and have been looking at the hydroboost, which is an excellent system, and this new electrically boosted system. Curiosity finally got the best of me and I had my buddy Mike pick up a setup for my remote, under floor setup. He has installed several of the electric ABS systems as firewall mounted systems, and likes their performance. I picked up the parts today for my setup, and will be taking them back to Maui with me on Thursday. I can't take any photos to post right now, as I have packed all this stuff with my dirty laundry wrapped around it in my suitcase to go home (an excellent use of smelly laundry....).

When I get it all mounted, I will post some pix, both of all the components laid out before they go in, and of the install, and will follow up with a report on how I like the system. I drove two rigs Mike had, both customer jobs, one hydroboost and one with this system, both are excellent systems. Guess I just like to try the new stuff and see how I really like it on my own rolling stock.

Aloha,
