Greetings All:
Question Please. Kids are going to pull the SBC out of their Henry J for some needed refreshing. They have never did this and here is the questions? First, is it hard to separate the engine from bellhousing with a TH400 Trans after the six bolts are removed in rear of block?, Can they leave torque converter on trans if they unbolt it from flexplate from underneath and will converter stay on trans shaft?,Will engine slide forward enough to clear bellhousing and also will trans leak fluid all over? Should they lightly support trans from underneath with a board and jack under the trans pan to keep trans from sagging?
Any other engine removal tips are greatly appreciated please. Lots of room in front of engine to go forward since radiator out. Lastly, easier to lift with intake manifold removed from block since its coming off engine anyway?, If so, can lifting bolts go in holes for intake manifold in the heads? Tried find more info but nothing really detailed on SBC engine removal with trans still in car. Can slightly above average folks do this job in a few hours? Don't want them biting off more than they can handle. Again, THANKS for your help.

usually no
Can they leave torque converter on trans if they unbolt it from flexplate from underneath and will converter stay on trans shaft?,
usually yes
Will engine slide forward enough to clear bellhousing
that depends on the car it varies
and also will trans leak fluid all over?
if you don,t remove the lines to the radiator or drive shaft... usually no leaks
Should they lightly support trans from underneath with a board and jack under the trans pan to keep trans from sagging?
thats almost mandatory
Any other engine removal tips are greatly appreciated please.
generally youll pull the distributor and starter and radiator and accessory brackets to prevent damage
Lots of room in front of engine to go forward since radiator out. Lastly, easier to lift with intake manifold removed from block since its coming off engine anyway?, If so, can lifting bolts go in holes for intake manifold in the heads?
yes and an engine tilter and a swivel hook, with the crank toward the front is very useful

eye-bolt.jpg

having several or at least 4 of these shoulder eye bolts in 3/8" NC thread are a huge help

use 4 1600 lb rated screw links to connect the chains from the engine tilter to the shoulder eye bolts

having a swivel hook on your engine cranes almost mandatory,as it allows you to easily spin the engine alignment
and obviously a decent engine tilter is a good idea, as it allows engine angle changes, just remember the crank handle faces away from the windshield , and the tilter screw thread bar requires moly lube grease
