Anybody ever use a Holley Contender sq. bore intake,(300-16),it's suppose to support a pretty big CI. It's similar to the old Z-28 dual plane, fairly broad range according to the paperwork I received with the new old stock intake(idle-7200Rpm ).I heard Holley bought out the Old Winter's foundry years ago,in the deal they got some old Gm molds. Also, any Edel. # 1910 quadrajet/ late model Quadrajet 800 cfm user's that's running the carb's modified with the idle circuit leaned out & redone ? Ive used the very similar HOLLEY 300-36 intake with great results on many 383 sbc cars in the past!

From what I can tell,Holley must have switched just the manifold's name only. The Contender,Street Dominator,Avenger or System Max are the same intake I been told. They don't make the intake since Weiand bought them out & dropped the intake. That when Weiand decided to market the Sleath & Air Strike manifolds & lowered the rpm rating on their intakes.Who knows about marketing of the new latest & greatest.I took the intake when it came in & give the port guy a choice of the Holley intake or I'd could sell it & buy an Edelbrock Rpm Air-Gap.He's the kind that's a straight shooter & loves his flow bench & pretty he's back logged himself. He said this manifold would work good with the cubic inches & he's very familar with it.I think the Lingenfelter book mention's this intake along with Edelbrock rpm's as the dual planes to work with. It's a good flowing dual plane with characteristic similar to the Z-28, which he stated would work for the heavy car & bigger motor. He says as hot as the temps are down here, block off the crossover,it's kinda same heat concept as the gap, with no tool space. He's also addressing blending the adaptor for quadrajet to the Holley square pattern.I'm addressing the Quadrajet right now, tore it down, cleaned it & have found a guy in Ohio named Cliff Ruggles(the guru of the Quadrajets)that wrote a book on the type of carb. Kinda an updated version of the modification's that the older Doug Roe's book that I had from the past. His book show's great detail & a lot different type receipe's for Q-jet carbs. He's so backlogged for months in advance,I guess I'll try rebuilding the q-jet myself & buy his parts.I've done several q-jets in stock form & many Holley thru out my younger racing years.I need to call him before I make my decision. Now that I tore the Edelbrock #1910 down & have also have 2 other late model mid 1980's 800 cfm Q-jets off 1 ton truck carbs. There's hardly any difference between the two.I guess I have a safety valve,I can always take the adapter off & go back to the Holley Carb if the Q-jet doesn'rt work out. I just tested the evaporator Ac core,so it's back in & waiting for cool air to blow. When the intake back from the port guy,the engine & tranny's going in. I need the space, parts are scattered every where's.Later Jr

Grumpy's right, the 300-36 is the correct part # for my Holley intake, the sq bore holley intake is the intake they advertise idle-7200 rpm.Pretty broad range I'd say. Have you had much luck with the bigger Quadrajets on street driver's,trying to have the best of both worlds.Using a carb & increasing the mpg for longer car club events without sacrificing very little performance. There's some very interesting information coming from Cliff's Performance on the quadrajets. He's did a very detailed book with suggestion or recipes for different levels of the Q-jet I had bought. A lot more information than the older 1973 Doug Roe Quadrajet book that I also have. Cliff has got a Pontiac or Olds street driver he runs with a Q-jet that run's in the 10's. Many guy's on his forum swear if the quadrajet is modified right,it's the next best thing to fuel injection.Later Jr
